Goth Culture: Inside a Goth Life Style

Goth, Goth Clothing

When a person thinks of Gothic style they think black, evil, destructive, blood, and horror. But what is it really? I went around to talk to all my Goth stereo type friends, got into their heads and really examined the Gothic culture. I guess the reasons I did this is because of all the labeling of “bad” seems to be directed to those who call themselves “Goth”.

First of all, there are a few different types of goth and I will thoroughly examine each one of them for your convenience.

I’ll start with the Mod Goth. Now the Mod Goth is a person who wears punk style clothing, they have perky attitudes about life in general, they are extremely into the 1980’s era, and enjoy a good conversation about anything. The Mod Goth likes extreme adventure but they don’t go over the illegal boundaries of getting arrested for being adventurous souls. They will be found in local cafe’s, open all night resturants, and in cheery parks. The Mod Goth’s music criteria: The Clash, The Cure, Tones On Tail, Simple Minds, Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, Yaz, Bauhaus, and Berlin – just to name a few. The Mod Goth’s movie criteria: Pretty In Pink, Ferris Buellers Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Real Genius, War Games, and One Crazy Summer just to name a few of these also.

A Mod Goth could care less about politics or religion. They care more about self efficiency, their carreer, and where their friends are moving off to in the world. They see life as a poem or some lyric in a 1980’s song. They are people friendly but keep closed until they know a person entirely. Being friends with a Mod Goth takes a lot of time because they seem so mysterious. But as soon as they let you into their circle, you are considered family to them. Most Mod Goth’s have turned to the Rockabilly genre due to the Emo’s taking in on the spotlight of culture now.

Now, let’s talk about the Glitter Goth. This type of Goth is mainly women with the exceptional few of the opposite sex, which is male. They are heavily into make up; the bright colored stuff, dressing in anything that is shiny black (vinyl or PVC), they also like fuzzy clothing (anything to do with animal print), they love dancing, and they are social butterflies. Mainly a Glitter Goth will be seen mostly during the night and out clubbing or drinking with friends. They love fast cars, designer drugs, and usually have the tendency to date more than one person at a time. Their life style is fast paced.

A Glitter Goth is indeed into glittery make up but also into the 1990’s era. Their music consists of Enigma, Nirvana, Sponge, Moby, and anything new that is techno pop. Their taste in movies are Triple X, Speed, Hackers, and anything to do with action. They like extreme adventure that goes beyond the boundaries of legal just for adrenaline sake. They cope with life with a sense of “this world is rotten” type of attitude but smile and move on to the next best thing.

Glitter Goth’s have a semi view of politics and religion but don’t like to get too involved due to their wild behavior. Instead they dress differently and act differently as a rebellion towards politics and religion. This is their way of “speaking out” while keeping to themselves. It is easy to get close to these people due to their high tolerance of the public. Their friendly stature is awesome and have tendencies to work in major public placed jobs.

The Dreary Goth. This is the Goth culture type that isn’t very pleasant to be with. Dreary Goth isn’t a public person. They wear all black, white make up with black lipstick and or eyeliner, into death, into hate, and into themselves. Most of us hear really horrible stories about bad and horrible things about these particular people. They live in misery because of some past event that they hold onto in life.

Dreary Goth’s spent time mostly alone working on music, movies, photography, or writings. They have a tendency to only open up to a selected few. A Dreary Goth is usually up most of the day working on the above project(s) until it is finished. My good friend James is a Dreary Goth so getting inside of his head was a piece of cake, where as, other interviewers would have had problems.

The Dreary Goth’s music selection would include Cris Angel, Collide, Dope, and other dark metal/techno beats. Their movie’s would include Saw, The Hill’s Have Eyes, and mainly vampire films. Blood and horror are something that they enjoy because life to them is death. They hate existing and have no need to change what is around them.

Most Dreary Goth’s would rather do something illegal to the politicians rather than help their fellow man. Their religion point of view is astronomical though. A Dreary Goth is highly into their religion and they have a love for history and science.

The last type of Goth is a concoction of a Mod, a Glitter, and a Dreary. I like to call them Gothic. The only thing that is different about the Gothic is their love for fashion in medieval clothing. These stereo types don’t like blood but love a good battle, this also pin points them from the other mentioned Goth cultures. A Gothic is well rounded and very cautious about the people around them but also friendly when it comes to being in a crowd.

Most Gothics are retired due to the Emo culture of kids. They have a wide range of music and movies but like to stick with the lighter side of the Goth style. Their political views are the jobs that they hold. Some are lawyers, police officers, and teachers. They are mainly into Catholic or Christian religion and have a good sense of parental guidance. They like hanging out with their punk rock friends every now and again just for “old times sake.

So, the next time you see a Goth, ask yourself this: “What type of Goth?” because there are four types. Or are they Goth? Because today there is a new culture taking place and that is the younger generation called “Emo”. Not all Goth’s are into blood and horror. I hope that this will help those who wanted to know more about the culture in Goth.
