Gorgeous Lace Wedding Fans

Lace wedding fans are beautiful and can be used in more than one way at a wedding. The simple fans are easy to make but are dainty and elegant. They can be used to decorate the tables, can be used as an embellishment on a gift and can even be given to the guests as party favors after the reception.

Purchase lace which is four inches wide and has a nice motif. Cut the lace into strips which are fifteen inches long. Cut one strip for each fan you’ll be making. Fold the lace like an accordion to make the basic fan. Press well so that the folds are nice and crisp.

If the lace is fairly stiff to begin with the accordion folds will hold. However, if the lace is limp you’ll need to treat it to stiffen it. First, fold the fan. Press it well then open it up and apply the stiffener. You can use fabric stiffener, purchased at a store that sells cloth or craft supplies, or you can make something similar yourself. Mix one part white glue with one part water and apply the liquid to the lace. Lay the lace on a piece of plastic and brush the glue on with a foam brush or other type.

After the glue has dried fold the fan again, following the original fold lines, and they’ll be stiff enough to stay. Now use a tiny brush and apply glitter glue or glitter paint to the edges of the fan. Or, use a colored marker to tint the edges of the lace. Make one type of design on the fan by moving a couple of inches from the glittered edge and make another glitter line – or marker line – which runs the length of the fan. This is easy to do if you open the fan, draw the line, and when the paint is dry, fold once again.

Make a different type of design on the fan by attaching tiny, fake jewels. Glue the jewels on with hot glue or another adhesive. Glue them in a line which runs parallel to the glitter line. Space the jewels far apart or align them next to each other. Make yet another arrangement by randomly placing the jewels, here and there, all over the fan. Instead of jewels you can attach tiny beads or sequin.

When you’ve finished with the fan design you want, cut two narrow ribbons of different colors, then tie them around the bottom area of the fan. Tie these into a bow or a knot. If you tie a knot choose an embellishment and glue it onto the knot to conceal it and further decorate the fan.

Use the finished fans with double-sided tape to make pew decorations, fans for the corners of tables or even to glue onto a gift. The fans can also be given as party favors after the reception. They’re absolutely gorgeous and simple as pie to make!
