For anyone who owns pets, has children, and for those of you who smoke, you have probably tried to find an air freshener that actually works. Perfumed household sprays usually mask the odor or make it worse depending on the brand and rarely gets rid of any odor. Because both of these products allege to do the same thing I figured that it is only fair to run through the list of claims, and then deliver the actual review of how these two products measure up.

Glade Neutralizer

Glade is a trusted brand name that has delivered quality products for many years. Their product the Glade Neutralizer vows to get any troublesome odors out of the air, even cigarette smoke.

So, how does it do it? Well, it has a blend of “plant and herb extracts to effectively neutralize odors.” It does work surprisingly well. I was pleasantly surprised. It seems the natural combination was put together properly in this case.

Oust

Oust is also made by SC Johnson, a trusted company, and provides the consumer with many ways to rid their space of nasty aromas. The oust fan is a small and handy little device that spreads the aromatic oil into the air. You can set it on a continuous speed or on a speed that shuts off and goes back on to save on battery power.

There are also smaller cans of the spray for your car and larger cans for your home or office. All of these ways to use this product are definitely a plus. It allows for variety and convenience.

Oust actually promises to ‘sanitize’ the air around you not just merely get rid of the smells themselves. According to statements by the company, “Oust works by the liquid attaching to the odor causing bacteria that is in the air and killing it before it covers your surfaces, clothes, and even before you breathe it into your lungs.

Conclusion

Well, it is now time to see how these two products measured up next to each other. Many factors went into this assessment and so you may find the end result surprising. Seeing that both of these products are made by the same company it is a little funny that the effects and features are so very different.

Personally, I like Oust much better. The fragrances are vast and all are pleasing whereas the spray Neutralizer has no real smell at all. When it was matched against the worst smells in a home the Neutralizer worked but with many sprays and even some follow up as well. The Oust fan killed the aromas as they occurred so that was super good! The spray, if you are not interested in the fans, worked very well. It took only a couple of mists to do the intended task.

As far as price, the Oust was comparable to the Neutralizer so there were no huge differences there. If you take into consideration the need to use more of the Neutralizer than the Oust then Oust would be cheaper in the long run. Also, I should lay to rest the misconception that the fan refills are super expensive. The fact is the Oust refills are only a couple of dollars and last for a month or two depending on the setting you use. For instance, we used the ‘every few minutes’ setting instead of the ‘continuous’ and it took at least a couple of months before needing to buy a new refill. Because the Oust kills the odor causing bacteria in the air it works before the aroma gets bad, basically stopping it from occurring. Oust definitely won this battle.
