Fun Outdoor Games for Your 4th of the July Barbeque

Fun Outdoor Games

With Summer well underway and the 4th of July just around the corner many people are looking for outdoor games to play with their families, especially for their 4th of the July BBQs so I figured I would oblige.

Volleyball: My favorite summer game has always been volleyball. It’s fairly inexpensive to get a regulation volleyball net , and get it all set up. The great thing about volleyball is that with a portable net you can set it up at the beach or in your backyard for your 4th of the July BBQ. The kids are easily entertained just throwing balls back and forth over the net, and it’s great fun for even those who aren’t that competitive to participate. The whole family can play, and be entertained, while those that are more competitive can still enjoy the competitive atmosphere.

Horseshoes: Horseshoes is an outdoor game played between two people (or teams of 2 people each) using four horseshoes and two stakes. Players take turns trying to “ring” their horseshoes around the stakes and accumulate points for doing so, having a horseshoe lean (a leaner) on the stake or having the closest horseshoe. This is another very inexpensive game. If you want to keep it to just the teens/adults you can purchase a more sturdy set, and if you want to include the kids you can go with a plastic set, but you might not get the full affect of the game.

To read more information about the history of the game and scoring you can go here: Horseshoes.

Washers: Maybe my favorite outdoor game to play during the summer. The kids will get a kick out of this one as well, though the adults will probably enjoy this one more as the game does require some skill to be good. There are many different kinds of washers including just one hole washers, 3 hole washers and 5 hole washers, but all variants aside you’re essentially trying to throw the washers in the respective holes to accumulate points.

For more information on washers you can go here: Washers.

Washer boards are very easy to make and you can get washers very inexpensively from a hardware store or Wal-Mart.

There are also a number of different bean bag tossing games you can play that are similar to both horseshoes and washers.

These games are great for the WHOLE family, but if you decide you’re looking for more kid-oriented games you can always roll out a slip-n-slide or check out Fun Attic’s Game List for various outdoor games that will entertain the kids for hours.
