Fun Dinosaur Themed Kids Crafts

Making fossils is a fun and educational craft kids of all ages can enjoy. For this craft you will need plastic dinosaur bones, 4 cups of sand, 2 cups of cornstarch, 1 tablespoon of cream of tartar, 3 cups of hot water, and wax paper. First, you will need to make dough that will dry looking like sand and will house your dinosaur bones. For the dough, mix the sand, cornstarch, cream of tartar and hot water in a large sauce pan. Over medium heat, stir this until the water is absorbed and the sandy mixture gets harder to stir. Remove from heat and let cool before handling the dough. Flatten the dough with your hand on the wax paper and press in your plastic dinosaur parts. You can leave in some bones or remove the parts to leave a cool impression. Dough may take a couple days to completely dry hard.

Where do baby dinosaurs come from? From giant dinosaur eggs! Here is how you can make your own papier-mâché dinosaur egg. You will need a balloon (1 for each egg), lots of newspaper, craft paint like tempura, 1 cup of flour, and 5 cups of water. First, you will need to make your “glue”. Mix the 1 cup of flour with only 1 cup of water and stir until well combined. Boil the remaining 4 cups of water and combine to the mixture stirring well again. While mixture is cooling, tear strips of newspaper about 1 inch wide. Next, blow up a balloon (to make a hatch able egg, you can even put a dinosaur toy inside the balloon). Dip each strip of newspaper into the glue mixture and wrap it around the balloon. Continue wrapping the entire balloon with 1 layer and then let dry, this may take up to a day. When dry, add a second layer of newspaper. If you would like to add a third layer, let the previous one dry first. Once everything is dry you can insert a straight pin and pop the balloon inside. Using paint, decorate your egg in any pattern or color you would like. Later, you can “hatch” your egg if you put a toy inside.

You can always make a mask to play dress up in, but what about making feet to stomp around in? Dinosaur feet are a great craft you can still play with later. All you need is a piece of cardboard, scissors, some paint and ribbon. To make the feet, draw a rounded heel with 3 pointy toes on the cardboard and cut out 2 that are drawn alike and are bigger than the size of your feet. Paint them however you would like and let dry. Punch 2 holes on opposite sides of each foot to attach the ribbon. Knot the ribbon on the underside and make a loop that is just big enough to slip your foot through. You can also make a second loop using the same directions but make it long enough to reach your waist. This way, you can hold on to the longer loops to help control your new feet. Now you’re ready to stomp around!
