Free Things to Do in San Antonio, Texas

Maybe you’re visiting San Antonio, or possibly live there and are looking for free things to do. Here is a list of a few must see places in San Antonio. All areas listed have entertainment near them but most of the entertainment costs money.

Visit the Alamo

In downtown San Antonio, a must see is the Alamo. The battle of the alamo took place in 1718 when 200 texans made a stand against the Mexican army. After 13 days of holding out Davey Crockett and others were able to give the Sam Houston army time to regroup and eventually win independance for Texas. Ozzie Osbourne once peed on the grass at the Alamo and was banned from Texas. That shows you how important the Alamo is to Texans. Today, visitors can tour the building, located in the heart of the city, and view artifacts from the site’s history. It is a must see at least once and it is completely free. Just don’t pee on it or it will be the last time you see it.

The Riverwalk

The riverwalk is a great place that is a must see. It is free to walk along the riverwalk and is known for it’s night clubs and shopping. A part of the riverwalk will take you directly into the rivercenter mall and seems to lift everyone’s spirits that visit it. The riverwalk is a great place to be in the action and receive free entertainment. The riverwalk is also home to numerous restaurants and some of them such as Roma’s are world famous.

McNay Art Museum

The Mcnay Museum is located north of downtown in San Antonio’s Alamo Heights neighborhood, the McNay Art Museum houses a nice collection of 19th and 20th century American and European paintings and sculpture, some of the most popular works are done by Rodin, Picasso and Cezanne. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m.

Visit the Little Village

Over by the east bank of the San Antonio river you will find the “little village”. It is also called “La Villita”. There are a number of street performers and also has artist studios and galleries. There are also restaurants and craft demonstrations that you will most likely enjoy. This is also a free place to visit that will allow you to have some fun, be around people, and not be forced to buy anything.

Paid Entertainment

If you are willing to spend some money there are also great things to visit in San Antonio. San Antonio is home to Sea World San Antonio. Six Flags Elich Gardens is another place to visit that you will enjoy. Also, the world’s biggest waterpark is located outside of San Antonio. It is called Schlitterbahn and is definately something you should look into if you are willing to spend a little. All of the above entertainment will cost around $30 per person for the day. If you happen to live in San Antonio, getting a season pass is only $20 more! Also, as previously mentioned do not miss out on the excellent eating opportunities that the city represents.
