Liner Fabric

Outer Fabric

Interfacing (fusible)

To get started you want to cut out 2 rectangles each at 10X14 inches of each of the following: Outer fabric, liner fabric, and fusible interfacing.

Lay these out so the 14-inch sides are the top and bottom. Round the two bottom corners on each piece. Tip: Take one piece of fabric, fold it in half. Cut the rounded corners. Now, use this as a pattern to cut the rest so they match perfectly.

Now, cut out 2 of each of the following to squares 2X3 inches: Outer fabric and fusible interfacing.

Now, to assemble the body of the free U handle purse pattern:

Iron the fusible interfacing to the back of each of the 10X14 inch exterior fabric panels.

Lay one exterior fabric panel pattern side up on your table. Lay the second face down on that piece. Pin the sides and bottom. Sew the sides and bottom with a ½ inch seam allowance.

Repeat this on the liner fabric that is 10X14 inches. On the middle bottom of the panels leave four inch opening. This will later be used to turn the U handle purse pattern inside out.

Now, to make the tabs to attach your U handles to the purse pattern you need to iron the fusible interfacing to the back of each tab.

Fold each tab in half, creating a long thin 1X3 inch strip of fabric. Iron this flat. Now, open the tabs. Take the left side of the fold and fold it in half to meet the ironed fold. Repeat on the other side. Now, fold again on the original ironed fold. You will have a ½ inch strip that is 3 inches long.

Iron this seam closed.

Now, turn the body of the purse fabric right side out. Slip the liner fabric over the body of the exteriors fabric. Pin the top edges together. Now, fold the four tabs for the handles in half.

Slip the purse handles on to the tabs and pin them shut.

Slip the folded in down inside of the two fabrics from the top. Place these the same width as your U handles for the purse on each side. Be sure they line up on both sides.

Slip the handles inside the two fabrics as well.

Sew this seam shut with a ½ inch seam allowance. Trim any thread on the U handle purse pattern.

Turn the howl free purse pattern inside out and check for any mistakes. If you are free and clear, then sew the opening in the liner shut by folding in the rough edges.

Push the liner back into the bag and your free U handle purse pattern is finished!
