Fitting Clothes to Your Body Type

Did you know that most women find it difficult to buy clothes to fit their body type? We don’t always know what style of clothes to wear to suit our figures. You might be a pear, an apple, an hourglass, or a rectangle body figure and choosing clothes for these body types can be rather tricky when you don’t know what clothes show off your best features.

If you have a pear shape body (curvy hips and backside with narrow shoulders and small to medium bust) we want to accentuate the shoulders and bust so that they appear bigger. This means nice loose fitting tops to give your upper body a larger appearance; a wide neckline is also good to visually widen the shoulders to balance the hips. Sleek dark colors will give your lower body a slimmer look therefore creating balance for your body type. Look at tops with a lot of detail, with either low, scooped or squared necklines as these are great for accentuating the bust and lifting the attention to your face. A-line or flared skirts work well as they tend to hide your thighs. Straight cut or flared dark jeans will also give you that slimming appearance.

The apple body type (a fuller midsection, broader shoulders and full bust) will want the main goal of your clothes to lengthen your torso and draw away the attention to the tummy. Work on accentuating your thin legs and curvy bust. Nice, comfortable fitted tops or wrap around tops, dark colors will suit your figure best. Belted jackets that fall to your thighs in length, this creates straight lines, which elongates your body beautifully. Try wearing shorter skirts of 1 – 5 inches above the knee, which show off your legs. Wear light colored or faded jeans that have back pocket flaps to give your bottom curve. Flared and boot cut will create the illusion of a long and slimmer body line.

The hourglass shape is the easiest to shop for, as most clothes look great on. It is the most curvaceous and symmetrical of all the body types. It’s well balanced and equal proportion of the shoulders and hips with a well defined waist. The main goal of your clothing is to draw attention to the flow of your waist without making your hips and shoulders look over exaggerated. Look for tops that accentuate your bust and waist, like V-neck or scooped necklines. Show off your contoured shoulders by wearing halter neck tops. Dark colors look great on you and give you a slimmer appearance. Most jackets designs will suit your body type but the tailored ones that tuck in at the waist will definitely draw attention to it. Midrise jeans with a slight flare work great for you. Full length skirts will make you look sexy and slimmer, especially with a front slit.

Most top models have the rectangular body type. For this body type simple and alluring style of clothing is the way to go that give you some curve. Look for supporting bras that are padded and give you a bit of cleavage. Simple wrap tops or thin strapped tops with low cut necklines will help emphasize your bust. They good thing about this body type, similar to the hourglass, you can get away with wearing almost anything.

Now that you know what styles suit your body type the next time you’re out shopping you’ll know exactly what to get.
