Fall Into a Maxi Skirt

Everyone was floored when my friend walked into a midday event in a maxi skirt. The outfit was perfect for the cool fall day and the occasion, but none of us in attendance would have considered the combination. In fact, I had already packed away my summer maxi skirts and dresses, thinking they were out of their element in the fall.

Part of the reason time seemed to stop when my friend walked into the party wearing a long skirt was the way she had styled her outfit. While everyone else was wearing very basic outfits, she glided in wearing a long red maxi skirt, a pretty off the shoulder sweater, brown leather flats and a matching cross body bag. The combination looked fresh, simple, and very comfortable. The look is easy to duplicate if you follow a few simple guidelines.

Stick with light fabrics
Like my friend proved, long lengths combined with cooler temperatures create a hot look. Unlike most fall fashions, continuing to wear sheer fabrics like chiffon, rayon, light cotton, or silk is actually a plus for maxi skirts. The lightweight fabric lets your fabulous boots or funky tights show. A heavy skirt that fall to the floor could be a little too much for your frame. Keep the look of the skirt ethereal while staying warm and comfortable.

Balance your look
In the summer, a tank top and sandals were all you needed to finish a maxi skirt outfit. Now, you will need a little bit more to stay warm, but that does not mean you have to pile on shapeless pieces. In fact, a fitted motorcycle jacket like this one by True Religion is a great way to add a bit of edginess to even the most feminine skirt. Keep your tops fitted or at the very least show your collarbones with a deep scoop or boat neck.

Choose shoes with care
As mentioned above, boots add a nice touch of autumn styling to a maxi skirt. If you are going to wear flats, look for boldly colored styles or shiny patent leather or these sequined pointy toe flats by Arizona to avoid the slipper look. Shoes with pretty vamp brooches are also given an opportunity to shine when peeking out from under a long skirt.

Deep slits add drama
A black maxi skirt complete with a deep slit like this sheer style by Guess is the beginning of a glamorous evening look. Pair the skirt with show-stopping shoes such as Victorian-inspired button boots, or metallic stilettos. Wear an equally dramatic top or a simple top and bold jewelry.

Layer with ease
This time of year is known for fluctuating temperatures and since most people are not quite ready to break out the winter jackets, layering is a very popular fall look. You can add layers without adding excess bulk by using thinner materials and remembering to create long lean lines. A long vest over a sleek turtleneck is one way to create visual height. If you add a long thin scarf or pendant necklace to the center of your body the slimming look is multiplied.
