There are so many great parks in New York City that are available not only for residents, but also for visitors to come and enjoy. The Parks Department does a terrific job not only in maintaining the parks, but also in providing free and low cost activities. Prospect Park in Brooklyn is one of the most famous. It has a world class zoo, carousel and many historic features such as the Arch in Grand Army Plaza which was erected to honor the Union Soldiers of the Civil War. No park compares in size with Central Park, but at more than 500 acres, Prospect Park ranks right up there with the biggest of the rest.
With parks like Prospect Park in Brooklyn, no child should ever say they have no place to go or nothing to do. Take a look at what your child would enjoy and either go with them to enroll them in one of the programs. They will thank you for it in the end.
All of the areas of the park have free activities going on all year long. There are literary hundreds of them for the whole family including free concerts under stars. They are there for you. Make use of them.
Prospect Park, Brooklyn has an Audubon Center by the boat house on the lake. Here you can explore nature trails, go on birding expeditions with experts. They have educational programs for children and regular on going programs. It is also a good place to come for a quick meal at the café.
The Carousel, at $1.50 a ride is a real bargain. You can also have birthday parties here. It is located in an area where there are many other things just for the kids.
The Lefferts Historic House is located near the Carousel and it is a place where city kids can get a look at county life. It is a refurbished 18th century farm house and the kids can play with toys from that era. You would be surprised at how much fun today’s technical savvy generation can have with toys from over 100 years ago. They have on going programs and special events and it is another great place to have a birthday party.
Long Meadow is the place to come to have a picnic, just throw a ball around or to come for a free concert by the New York Philharmonic.
And the Prospect Park Brooklyn Zoo. It is big enough with about 400 animals to provide a days worth of things to do and yet not so big that it will overwhelm small children. They have a chance to get up close and personal with a lot of the critters also.
The Tennis Center is open year round and there are both child and adult lessons and it is another great place for a birthday party.
In winter there is ice skating at the Wollman Rink for the whole family.
There is also a 3.5 mile bridle path. You can rent horses from a private stable just outside the park and let the horses do the walking for you.
There are seven play grounds strategically placed around the edge of the park. No matter what entrance you use, there will be one waiting for you.
