Entomology – The Study of Insects

Entomology is the study of insects. Entomologists research and study insects and use the findings to interconnect with other fields of biology. Entomology has many sub-branches. The most interesting sub-branch is “forensic entomology”. This branch is very closely related to forensic science. Forensic entomologists identity insects and insect remains at crime scenes and try to find out information about the criminals involved. Certain insects are found only in certain areas and at specific times. This information can be used to pinpoint the time and location of crimes.

Other entomologists study insects which act as germ carriers and cause diseases. One such common insect is the anopheles mosquito which spreads malaria. Malaria is a very common disease that affects millions of people around the world. Because of the studies conducted by these scientists, it has been possible to control diseases spread by insects to a large extent. In recent years, the spread of West Nile disease and Lyme disease in North America has come under control.

Sometimes insects may be used to study new experimental drugs. For example, brain drugs may be tested on cockroaches. Since the insects’ nerves function similar to human nerves, these experiments can yield useful information in treating diseases like Parkinson’s.

Water bodies often get polluted because of pesticides and other industrial wastes. Insects may indicate pollution in the water bodies. By studying specific insects, it is possible to estimate to what level the water bodies have been polluted by industrial and other wastes. Entomologists also try to minimize the use of pesticides and at the same time protect the crops through natural/biological means.

Professional entomologists have at least a bachelors degree in entomology. Many also have higher educational degrees like a masters or a doctorate. Entomologists work in private firms that deal with forestry, pesticides etc. The government may also employ entomologists. They also work in insecticide application and similar related fields. This usually requires additional certification.

Many universities and colleges across the world offer entomology as a course. If a student performs exceptionally well at the bachelor’s level and is interested in pursuing research, he/she can join a doctorate program in entomology. After completion of the program, he/she can obtain higher level jobs like that of a research scientist or head of a college program.
