Easy Stained Glass Stepping Stone Instructions

Provide a touch of “glass” to your garden or patio area with easy to make stained glass stepping stones. Create different shaped stained glass stepping stones using stepping stone molds or any flat sided plastic container.

Things You’ll Need:

Stepping stone mold or flat sided plastic container
1 roll of contact paper
Pencil
Craft knife
Petroleum jelly
Paper towel
2 bags multi-colored stained glass chips
1 bag of Quikcrete outdoor cement
Water
Mixing container
Mixing utensil

Instructions:

Step 1 – Place the stepping stone mold on a sheet of contact paper. Trace around the bottom edge of the mold. Cut the mold shape from the contact paper.

Step 2 – Place the contact paper cutout in the inside bottom of the mold. Center and push the design into place. Press the edges firmly against the side of the mold. Remove the excess contact paper by pulling the point of a craft knife through the contact paper along the bottom crease of the mold. It is important that the contact paper fit easily yet snugly inside the mold without edges of the paper going up the sides.

Step 3 – Remove the contact paper from the bottom of the container. Cover the edges on the inside of the mold with petroleum jelly with a paper towel.

Step 4 – Remove the paper backing from the contact paper. Turn the contact paper so it matches the shape of the mold. Place the contact paper inside the mold with the sticky side facing up.

Step 5 – Place and press the stained glass pieces into the desired design so the front side of the chip is facing down. Position the chips so there is a 1/8 to 1/4 inch space between each chip. Larger spaces may occur if making a design with curves. Larger spaces are fine but try and keep the pieces as close together as possible. Designs include straight lines, zigzags, diagonal lines and circles. Create specific shapes such as flowers, butterflies or so on. There is no right way to place the stained glass chips. Just a haphazard placement of the chips creates a very unusual and unique stained glass stepping stone.

Step 6 – Mix a 4 to 6 cups of Quikcrete according to the directions on the container. Pour the mixture into the stepping stone mold until it is level with the top edge. Mix more Quikcrete if necessary.

Step 7 – Allow the Quikcrete to dry 24 hours.

Step 8 – Remove the finished stained glass stepping stone from the mold Place your hand on the surface of the stepping stone. Flip the mold over to remove the stained glass stepping stone. Peal the contact paper from the surface of the stone.

Tips: Place a pre-drawn design beneath the contact paper if desired. Follow the lines of the design with the appropriate colored stained glass chips.
