Do-It-Yourself Mistletoe Decoration

Mistletoe

What is Christmas without a little mistletoe? And if I told you that you could make it for below ten dollars? Who would not want to make a beautiful decoration to showcase in their home and be able to say that they made it themselves? I know I do.

There are only a few items you will need to get started. The craft itself takes about a half hour to put together and you are done!
Need:

One vine of Mistletoe (fake or real)

One spool of wide holiday ribbon (white, gold or silver)

A thin (matching) color string or curling ribbon.

One charm or bell to adorn the very bottom of the decoration

First, you will need to start with the small vine of mistletoe. You can pick one of these up at any of your local Wal-mart stores for five to six dollars. Next, you will want to pick up a roll of ribbon you want to wrap with. The color should be seasonal, with my personal favorites being gold, white or silver. I find a nice selection of wide seasonal ribbon and curling ribbon at the local dollar stores.

Lay the mistletoe vine in a straight line. Beginning from one end, roll the vine in a ball as you would a snowball. Roll the vine in this fashion until about two thirds is rolled. Leave a section of the vine unrolled (to hang the decoration with). See Photo. Secure the ball of mistletoe with a small piece of curling ribbon. The curling ribbon is not to be seen, but in the event that it is seen, it should be a matching color to the wide ribbon.

Once you have the initial form of the decoration made, it is time to add the ribbons. Starting at the bottom, bring the ribbon around the bottom and back up to the starting point on the opposite side of the ball. Secure both ends here at the top. Have another wrap begin next to the original start place. Secure this in the same way on the opposite side. So, if you are looking at the mistletoe ball from top or bottom, you see an ‘X’ formed out of the ribbon. At the bottom of the mistletoe ball, use some of the curling ribbon to secure the two sections of the ‘X’ together.

Use the wide ribbon to create a small loop to hide the joining of the ribbons. The charm or bell chosen to accent the decoration can be added to the bottom using a small loop of wide ribbon. The loop will then hide the curling ribbon and allow a place to hang the charm. You’re almost done!

Next, take the remaining wide ribbon and wrap it around the long piece of vine used to hang the decoration. Secure at the top and bottom (the top of the mistletoe ball) and hang! It is that easy! If you would like to get really creative or just want that extra wow accent, spray the leaves of the mistletoe with a decorators spray glitter. This will accent off the leaves very nicely and show great holiday spirit. When you are all done, it should look like this! Great job!
