DIY: How to Make Kitchen Cabinet Doors

You might want to make your own cabinet doors because perhaps your old cabinet doors is old enough or has already given up. Or perhaps you might want to just replace and give a facelift on your cabinet doors rather than installing a new cabinet for your kitchen.

First thing to be done is to plan what type of design you want for your cabinet doors. Consider this tip from home interiors suite 101 “The initial thing to take into consideration is what kind of a finish you are going for. For a natural finish such as tung oil, varnish, or polyurethane, the cabinet door wood needs to match the cabinet wood. If you insist on them being different, keep them consistently different and create a consistent theme. In order to match, the wood should be the same so that the grain and color is respectably similar. Consider, oak has a characteristic “pin” looking grain, but few oak varieties are the exact color. Oak ranges from bleached to darkish red. If you’re building kitchen cabinets or doors yourself, and not prefab, know that kitchen cabinet doors use a boatload of trim. If the bankroll is an issue, avoid pecan, walnut, oak, and the like, and check out poplar. This hardwood is easy to work with, glues well, is affordable, and has a range of color streaks that are easy on the eye.”

There are many designs and styles available for kitchen cabinet doors that you may choose from. But if you want just a simple do-it-yourself simple kitchen cabinet door, here is a step by step guide on how to facelift you kitchen with your new kitchen cabinet doors.

1) First is measurement. Take the right measurement of the area of the kitchen cabinet that needs covering. To make an efficient and better kitchen cabinet door, you might want to make the door lightly larger than the actual cabinet measurement in order for the kitchen cabinet door to overlap and seal the kitchen cabinet you are covering. Take your measuring tool to make the measurement.

2) With many types of wood you can choose from, select the wood that suits your taste and design for the cabinet door. You may use a cedar, an oak, or any other type of wood as long as it is a sturdy type of wood. You might want your kitchen cabinet doors to be sturdy as well.

3) Cut the wood according to the measurement you made earlier. Then place the cut wood for the kitchen cabinet door agianst the cabinet for marking. Take your pencil and mark the place where you want to place the hinges for the kitchen cabinet door. Then take the drill and make the appropriate hole in your kitchen cabinet door. To make your screwing of the hinges for the kitchen cabinet door, make sure to mark where the hinges go in the cabinet.

4) After preparing the wood and the hinges, the kitchen cabinet door is about to be attached to the cabinet. But first, make the design you want for the kitchen cabinet door. You might want to make your kitchen cabinet door look better than just a plain piece of wood covering your cabinet. Give the wood a smooth finish by scraping and sanding the rough surface. You might want also to put a glossy look by applying wood paint or wood stain on it. Remember though not to place first the door hinges until you are done painting the new kitchen cabinet door. To give the new kitchen cabinet door a more professional look than an ordinary one, apply more than one coating of wood paint.

5) After the paint is completely dried, prepare now to attach the new kitchen cabinet door on the cabinet. But before you install the new kitchen cabinet door into the cabinet, place first the hinges into the kitchen cabinet door and screw it. Then make the finishing step by mounting the new kitchen cabinet door into the cabinet.
