DIY: How to Install a Furnace

If you were ever wondering how to install a furnace, look no further. With this simple guide, you might want to save yourself some money and install your furnace. Of course, if you are not 100% sure of what to do, always enlist the help of a professional heating and cooling company and you can ask them how to install a furnace.

1.First you will need to decide what size furnace you need to heat your house adequately. The size of your home will be a deciding factor on what size furnace you will need. Always make sure you get the right size furnace because if you don’t it might end up costing you more money in the future. I recommend calling a professional heating and cooling company.

2. Next, just because you learn how to install a furnace on your own does not mean that you do not need to refer back to the manufacturer’s manual when you’re stuck. Always install your furnace exactly how the manufacturer specifies because if you don’t, and your furnace breaks down when it’s under warranty, you might not get reimbursed for the cost. You will need to figure out how much space there needs to be between the furnace and the wall and when that is determined, you can secure the furnace to the wall per your manual. I always say, it doesn’t hurt to ask a heating and cooling professional for help. Do it!

3. Before installing your new furnace, make sure the juice is off to where you’re working. You do not want to electrocute yourself. Even if you are installing a gas furnace, it still requires electricity, so don’t think you don’t have to turn off that circuit breaker before you begin your work. Make sure the power is off before starting any electrical job.

4. Remove your new furnace from the box and try to organize your equipment and tools, so that you have everything at your fingertips. Organization helps to a better job, especially when you are just learning how to install a furnace.

5. After you have installed all the proper internal workings of the furnace, i.e. wires, etc, you can then start on your duct work. Pay attention to the instructions in great detail when you install your duct work. Retro fitting the old duct work might be a challenge because most of the new units are smaller and more compact. Make sure the vent cap is flush to the wall and then you can install your furnace to the wall with the help of a heating and cooling professional.

6. Never, ever when you are learning how to install a furnace should you hook up the gas connectors. You could risk a fire or explosion and even carbon monoxide problems. Again, always make sure your circuit breaker to your furnace is in the off position.

This guide on installing a furnace is just a guide. Always enlist the help of a heating and cooling professional when installing a furnace. Again, never try to connect the gas hook up.
