Celebrate Earth Day 2012 with NYC Green Events

Every year, there are great events that help everyone to appreciate and celebrate Mother Nature. Here are some events happening in New York City during Earth Day weekend.

Earth Day 2012

On 42nd Street in the Times Square area all the way over to Grand Central, there will be plenty of free interactive exhibits, kids programs, seminars, food tastings, giveaways and live music celebrating Earth Day. This annual event is sponsored by Earth Day New York, a nonprofit organization located in New York City. The festivities begin on Thursday, April 19th. Green Festival

The Green Festival will be held at the Javits Center North on Saturday, April 21st from 10 am to 7 pm and Sunday, April 22nd from 11 am to 6 pm. This event, sponsored by Green America and Global Exchange, celebrates everything relating to being green including workshops, films, celebrities, fun activities for children and eco-businesses. The food court will include a variety of organic, vegetarian and vegan cuisine. Keynote speakers include Van Jones, the founder of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights; Russell Simmons, Hip-hop icon and Dr. Helen Caldicott, president of the Nuclear Policy Research Institute. A day pass costs $10 and includes an eco-tote bag or buy a weekend pass for $15 which includes an eco-tote bag and $5 Green Festival Bucks to use during the festival. Harlem Earth Day Celebration

There will be various festivities happening in Harlem on Sunday, April 22nd at various Harlem parks starting at 10 am. The event is sponsored by Harlem Park to Park Initiative, a community improvement association formed in 2009 to encourage commerce promoting Harlem. Morningside Park activities include a kids yoga class sponsored by Land Yoga and planting with Girl Scout Troop #3174. There will be live music and a workshop on growing with community markets in Marcus Garvey Park. The Aloft Hotel will be the site for a green economic development program including information about energy and green careers. Many Harlem businesses will have various earth day activities. The High Line Earth Day Celebration

On Sunday, April 22nd, visit The High Line for a day filled with green workshops and fun celebrating Earth Day. For children and families, there will be live music, face painting and wildflower seed balls for visitors to take home and grow on their own. Founded in 1999, The High Line is a public park built on a freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. The festivities begin at 10 am. A Clearing in the Forest: Earth Day Celebration in Central Park

There will be plenty of free programs and events in Central Park. One special event will take place on the Great Hill at West 107th Street with a Growing Green Concert from noon to 2 pm. Maria Sangiolo, an award-winning artist, will perform her newest songs including Picking Strawberries and Garden Slugs. After the concert, visitors can plant their very own mini-garden with seeds provided by the Central Park Conservancy.
