Buying a Boat? Don’t Overlook These Important Tasks After the Purchase

Buying a boat can be a thrilling and exciting event. You will want to gather your family and friends and cast off. However, the best thing to do after buying your boat is to wait before you put it in the water. Before the celebration with family and friends on the water can come, you’ll have some priorities you’ll want to handle first.

If this is your first boat ever, you should take a boat safety course before even thinking about putting your boat in the water. The best way to find out about enrolling in a boat safety course is to contact your local coast guard.

You couldn’t just jump in a car and start driving until you learned some basic safety. Boating shouldn’t be any different. Owning a boat is a big responsibility. Yes, boating is fun, but it can also be dangerous. So do yourself, your friends, and your family a favor and take the boating safety course.

Once you have bought the boat, you will have to register the boat. If necessary, re-title the boat as well as the trailer. You’ll have to give your fair share to Uncle Sam in the form of sales tax. You’ll also have to make sure all your stickers are valid and current. For heaven’s sake, don’t forget to get your boat insured! Make sure you understand the coverage you are buying completely.

The worst thing you could do is have a boating accident and find out that type of accident isn’t covered under your policy. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be embarrassed if you need your agent to explain the boat insurance policy in simpler terms. They’re the expert in boat insurance, not you. Sometimes they forget and will throw out jargon and not realize it.

The best thing you can do when you first take your boat out is to go with an experienced boat owner, if at all possible. They will be able to teach you insider tips and tricks. For example, they will be able to teach you how to turn your boat when you’re confined in a tight space. They can show you the easy way to trailer your boat.

While they are there, you should have them help you practice docking the boat. You should practice docking the boat where there are different sized currents and wakes. It always helps to have an experienced boat owner with you when you are at the helm. You should practice being at the helm and steering the boat for a while before you take others out on your boat.

By being a boat owner you’ve opened up a whole new world. Owning a boat will afford you relaxation, socialization, and fun. It is important to stay safe and be in compliance with all rules, regulations, and laws so you can enjoy your boat for many years to come.
