Breakfast Made Easy: Review of Krusteaz Complete Pancake Mix with Blueberries

Growing up in New York, I had never heard of the Krusteaz brand. I moved to Alaska in 1977 and was married in 1980, and my husband introduced me to the greatest pancake mix ever. Krusteaz was started by a women’s bridge club back in 1932, and is still a best seller today. It is manufactured by Continental Mills.

We use Krusteaz pancake mix all the time, and we are always sure to pack it in our motorhome each summer. What makes this product so great isn’t just the taste, it’s the simplicity. It is complete, and all you have to add is WATER. How much easier could it get? Mix, pour, cook and eat. And the batter can be covered and stored in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours, so if you have leftover batter it won’t go to waste. If you want to freeze leftover pancakes, you can do so for up to 3 months.

To make 6-7 four inch pancakes, you add 1 cup mix with 3/4 cup water, mix it up and you are done. And it tastes absolutely wonderful! The pancakes rise to a light and fluffy texture with a delicious flavor. The bag also lists directions for making waffles. I like to use a whisk to get the lumps out, and I pan fry them in a skillet coated with canola oil.

The Krusteaz mix has a shelf life of approximately 2 years, so it’s a nice staple to have on hand.

Each Krusteaz product comes with a Quality Pledge, assuring the consumer that their products are of the finest quality. They list their address and a toll free number in case you have any questions about their products.

Thoughts

Krusteaz pancake mix is low in saturated fat, has no trans fat (the bad fat), and it provides fiber to the diet. The variety I purchased includes imitation blueberries, so it’s higher in sugar, but no more than many kids cereals on the market today.

My daycare children asked me to purchase the blueberry variety for their breakfasts. They really seem to love it, although I personally prefer the Krusteaz buttermilk pancake mix. The blueberries consist of little chunks of sugar, and surprisingly enough, they do have a good blueberry taste, and dissolve in the fry pan so you’re not eating clumps of sugar. But they also add a bit of sugar to an otherwise pretty healthy product – and when you pour syrup over the pancakes, you are really getting a ton of sugar.

Krusteaz makes their pancake mix in low fat, high fiber and a few other varieties. There’s something for everyone.

I purchase mine in the 5 pound bags, but they also come in 10 pound bags and smaller boxes. My bag was a little more expensive than the store brand, running around $4.00. I feel Krusteaz is worth the extra money, because I’ve never been disappointed in any of their products. This gets two thumbs up from my daycare children.
