Birth Flowers – a Fun Gift Idea

Were you familiar that there were birth flowers? Birth flowers are much like birthstones that many people are familiar with today. Birth flowers are respectively connected to your classic zodiac sign or your birth month. Your classic zodiac sign is distinguished by the birth month – therefore someone that is born in December will be a Sagittarius and so on. Here is a list of the common birth flower that is associated with each month and each classic zodiac sign. This information is collected from the Society of American Florists and from what I was taught while young.

According to your birth month:
1. January: Carnation and Snowdrops
2. February: Primrose and Violet
3. March: Daffodil and Jonquil
4. April: Daisy or Sweet Pea
5. May: Lily of the Valley
6. June: Rose or Honeysuckle
7. July: Water Lily
8. August: Gladiolas or Poppy
9. September: Aster or Morning Glory
10. October: Calendula or Cosmos
11. November: Chrysanthemum
12. December: Narcissus or Holly

According to your classic zodiac sign:
1. Aries: March 21 to April 19: Prickly pear, cockscomb, red roses, tulips and amaryllis.
2. Taurus: April 20 – May 20: Sweet William, lavender, lilac, aster, lily of the valley and sweet pea.
3. Gemini: May 21 – June 20: Winter cherries, ranunculus, maidenhair fern, acacia, daffodil, and cactus.
4. Cancer: June 21 – July 22: Cornflower, Queen Anne’s lace, delphinium, ferns, passionflower, hydrangea and iris.
5. Leo: July 23 – August 22: Safflower, croton, Joseph’s coat, marigold, gerbera, crocosmia, dahlia, and sunflowers.
6. Virgo: August 23 – September 22: Monkshood, St John’s wort, chrysanthemum, eucalyptus, veronica, violet, ivy, and thistle.
7. Libra: September 23 – October 23: Chincherinchee, Moluccella, Cymbidium orchid, gardenia, tea roses, tuberose, freesia, and gladiolus.
8. Scorpio: October 23 – November 22: Venus fly trap, Alpinia, Amaranthus, red hot poker, hibiscus, peony, cactus and anthurium.
9. Sagittarius: November 23 – December 22: Foxtail lily, eustoma, blazing star, carnation, crocus, muscari, berried plants and allium.
10. Capricorns: December 22 – January 20: Statice, holly, African violet, ivy, philodendron, kentia palm, snowdrop and jasmine.
11. Aquarius: Jan. 20 – Feb. 19: Eryngium, arum lily, bird of paradise, pitcher plant, banksia, protea, yucca and aloe.
12. Pisces: February 19 – March 20: Madonna lily, Euphorbia marginata, papyrus, stephanotis, jasmine, lilac, narcissus and gypsophila.

Now, some of these are a little different than what the Society of American Florists suggests since these are what I have learned to be the flowers from a young age. As with birthstones, there are always difference of opinions of what is correct and what is not. For fun, try purchasing the flower or your loved ones birth month or classical zodiac sign as a present. It is a conversation piece and will impress those that are not familiar with birth flowers.
