Big S Sizzlin’ Bacon Sunflower Seeds

One of my husbands favorite snacks are sunflower seeds. During a recent grocery shopping trip at Walmart, I found a bag of Big S Sizzlin’ Bacon Sunflower Seeds and thought this would make a nice treat for him, especially since he also loves the taste of bacon.

Big S Sizzlin’ Bacon Sunflower Seeds come in a plastic bag, containing 5.35 ounces. The top of the bag has a zip style closure which is very handy, it helps to keep the sunflower seeds fresh between snacks. There is a small window on the bottom of the bag that shows what the product looks like, and these looked like nice large and plump seeds.

The bag states that these are “USA Made”, and that they are seasoned with J&D;’s BaconSalt bacon flavored seasoning salt. These are made in Colorado, and the back of the package does indeed state that these contain “Only the finest jumbo seeds available” (I guess that is where the name “Bigs” comes from). The bag also states that these are the world’s first bacon flavored seeds.

Well my husband was not very impressed with Big S Sizzlin’ Bacon Sunflower Seeds. I bought this bag about a month ago, and it is still sitting on the kitchen counter, and it is nearly full. While I do feel that the shell of the seeds have a smoky flavor, my husband didn’t think they tasted at all like real bacon. The product claims “They’re so good that you can taste that crispy delicious bacon flavor like it’s hot off the skillet”. That is a pretty bold claim, and unfortunately neither my husband nor I experienced anything close to the claim that is being made by the Bigs Brothers.

The best way to experience any sense of bacon is to suck on the shells, but once you break open the shell and eat the sunflower seed inside neither of us tasted any bacon flavor, it is all on the shell. The bag does have a guarantee, if you are not satisfied they will replace it with returned proof of purchase, so there is that. I have not taken the time to do so, although the company website and address are printed on the back of the bag.

Overall, this product was disappointing for both my husband and I, and if you are watching your sodium intake, you need to be aware that only 1/4 cup kernels (3/4 cup with shells) contains 240 mg of sodium, which is 10% of your daily value as set by the USDA. The good news is that one serving does provide 7 grams of protein, 3 grams of dietary fiber, 2% of your vitamin A, 4% calcium, 2% vitamin C, and 10% of your daily amount of iron.
