Best 5 Places to Go Canoeing in Georgia

I love going canoeing in Georgia. Some of my favorite places to canoe within the state are located within the park system. Out of all the Georgia State Parks, there are five that tend to have the best canoeing opportunities. Here is a brief rundown on each one:

1. Crooked River State Park

The Crooked River State Park in St. Marys is one of my favorite places to go canoeing because it is so scenic and replete with coastal wildlife. It is also so peaceful that just being there often makes me forget all my concerns at least for a few hours. The park features 4 miles of tidal river waters, a boat ramp, a boat dock, onsite camping, hiking trails and easy access to the Cumberland Island National Seashore. In addition, there are ranger-led, canoe and kayak programs offered throughout the year. I recommend that if you do decide to visit that you bring your binoculars and waterproof camera along for the ride. You can usually catch a glimpse of all sorts of birds. The park opens daily at 7 a.m. and parking is $5 per vehicle.

2. Stephen C. Foster State Park

The Stephen C. Foster State Park in Fargo is a wonderful place to go, if you want to canoe through the Okefenokee Swamp. Its dark and mysterious waters are something that I never seem to tire of. While you are there, be sure to visit Billy’s Island. I have been there several times. It’s a four mile round trip, but well worth it. In the 1920s the island was actually a logging town and some remnants of it still remain. You might also want to stop by one of the local eateries and feast on some sucker fish with a side order of swamp gravy. The park opens daily at 7 a.m. and a $5 parking fee is required. A boat ramp, boat tours, boat rentals and camping are available onsite.

3. Little Ocmulgee State Park and Lodge

The Little Ocmulgee State Park and Lodge is a good choice for canoeists looking to make a week of it. It features a 265-acre lake, boat rentals, fishing, an 18-hole golf course and much more. There is a gorgeous lodge onsite for those that prefer luxury to roughing it. Tent and RV sites are available on premise as well. The park opens daily at 7 a.m. and visitors may expect to pay $5 in order to park.

4. Tallulah Gorge State Park

Looking for the thrill of white water rapids? You’ll find that and then some at the Tallulah Gorge State Park in Tallulah Falls. It is quite literally, an outdoor enthusiasts dream. There are certain days throughout the season when the rapids are the best, thanks to planned water releases. You can find a list of those days on the park’s website. In addition to the white water, there are amazing trails available for hiking and biking. Camping, fishing and other activities are available as well. The park opens daily at 8 a.m. and parking is $5.

5. Fort McAllister Historic Park

The Fort McAllister Historic Park is located in Richmond Hill. What makes it an excellent choice for canoeists is its location and amenities. The park offers access to tidal waters that teem with native flora and fauna. The onsite campground is right near the water and affords easy access to the boat ramp and dock. So does the picnic area. Boat rentals and saltwater fishing is also available on premise. The park opens daily at 7 a.m. and visitors must remit a $5 parking fee.
