Basics for 80s Inspired Fashion

Every now and then, it happens. You’re flipping through a magazine or watching TV and BAM people are wearing clothes you wore almost 30 years ago. Currently, the trendy decade appears to be the 80s. Wow, that was a long time ago, but it’s back. Best of all, you can recreate the look without spending a ton of money. All you need are a few basic items for an 80s inspired wardrobe.

Scrunchies

Whether they were in your hair or on the hem of your t-shirt, scrunchies were a huge hit in the 80s. When it comes to hairstyles though, the scrunchie was truly a versatile accessory. Scrunchies could be used to create a ponytail on the side or a partial ponytail up top. You could even combine different colors to create unique looks to match your outfit. The best part is that scrunchies can be found for $1, which makes this basic 80s fashion statement very budget friendly.

Large Sweaters

Sweater dresses were all the rage in the late-80s. Sweater dresses could be fancy or plain. It could be a large sweatshirt with your favorite design or a cashmere sweater. The key was for the sweater to be long enough to be a dress. Many people simply paired sweater dresses with a belt and a pair of tights. If you wanted to be a bit warmer through, you added a pair of leggings.

Leggings

Every 80s inspired wardrobe needs at least one pair of black leggings. Black leggings look great with sweater dresses, but were also cute paired with baggy t-shirts. If you want to really jazz up your 80s wardrobe, add several different colors of leggings with different prints. Think back to the days of Madonna. Don’t be afraid to grab that pair of hot pink leggings with the leopard print. Paired with a black tee, it could be the cutest outfit for ladies night out.

Colorful Plaid Shirts

The 80s were really the first decade where women got a chance to dress more manly. Women were allowed to cut loose and wear items normally reserved for men, such as button up plaid shirts. These shirts are making a huge comeback and are available in a number of different colors. Whether you’re looking for a purple and black or hot pink and green top, you’re bound to find the perfect piece for your 80s inspired wardrobe. Best of all, this look allows you to be laid back. Roll up your sleeves, buy the shirt so that it’s a bit baggy and forget tucking it in. It’s the perfect piece for a stroll in the park or a shopping trip.

T-Shirts

Last, but not least, no 80s inspired wardrobe would be complete without a few tees. T-shirts are the perfect piece to match with leggings or to wear under plaid shirts. And, don’t forge to roll up the sleeves. The look might have been popular with men in the 50s, but it became a hit with women in the 80s as well. Of course, if you really want to make a statement, don’t forget the importance of layers. The 80s was all about layering several different pieces to create an outfit that made a big statement. Lastly, keep the colors bold. The 80s was far from a boring decade. Colors were bright, vibrant and caught the eye. Think neon pink or green, both of which were popular in 80s fashion.
