Baby Food Recall by Plum Organics

A baby food recall from Plum Organics is underway. The baby food recall applies to the Plum Organics baby food that is sold at Babies R Us, Target, and Whole Foods stores around the country. The fear is that two different types of Plum Organics baby food could be contaminated, and that it should not be used at this time. The two Plum Organics baby food types that are being called into question are their apple-flavored and carrot-flavored baby foods. If you are in possession of either type of these Plum Organics foods, make sure to either dispose of them or return them to the store.

The Plum Organics baby food recall is a serious issue, because of what the company fears may be included in the batch of foods that have been released. The major concern is that there could be a Botulism contamination, and though the illness is considered to be rare, it can also be extremely serious and life threatening. This has led Plum Organics to issue a voluntary recall of these two baby food products, and hopefully they reach enough of the consumer base that it can get off of the market before a baby potentially gets sick. This is going to quickly become the responsibility of the parent, because it isn’t clear if Plum Organics is doing enough.

If you take the time to peruse through the Plum Organics main site right now, you aren’t going to find anything about this recall mentioned. You also aren’t going to find it under their press release section, and the reasoning behind that decision isn’t immediately becoming the clear. The assumption would be that the company doesn’t want to broadcast that they have been selling a potentially contaminated product on the same site where they want to sell more of their products, and if that assumption is true, it is showing Plum Organics to be a bit negligent in looking out for their customers here.

It should be made clear that there have been no reported illnesses associated with the Plum Organics food, and that it is a good thing that they are participating in this recall. It is possible that they could be doing more in this instance though, and that there are additional steps that could be taken to ensure that no parent is feeding their baby the apple or carrot-flavored baby foods from Plum Organics right now. The specific recall is geared towards any of the carrot or apple baby food that is in the 4.22 ounce pouches, with a “best by” date of May 21st, 2010. The UPC code on those packages is 890180001221. Proceed with extreme caution if you have the Plum Organics foods until you make sure that yours isn’t on this list.
