Another Shot for Tila “Tequila” Nguyen

Tila “Tequila” Nguyen is getting another shot at finding love, according to MTV. That, after ending the debut season and selecting a male suitor, Bobby Barnhart, who ABC news quotes is at an end because “she never called.” Big shock, right, Bobby?

A Shot At Love With Tequila” was nothing more than a voyeuristic view of one bad girl doing what comes naturally – acting badly. Her visits with the parents of various contestants could only be categorized as scripted “let’s see how badly I can shock the norms” with Ms. Nguyen going out of her way to be outrageous, then poorly acting contrite at her shocking come-ons to other family members.

Is this the best that MTV can come up with?

This is the network that took what had once been merely promotional spots to sell an album into an art form. And this is the most creative use of air time the current band of management can put out?

Once upon a time (a whopping 25 years ago) MTV was unique and fresh. It was a way for music fans to ‘connect’ to their favorite bands and performers. It was at times short-form film making use of extremely creative minds to convey a message.

Sure, even at the beginning many of the videos on MTV were overtly sexual in nature, but the raunch factor, except VERY late at night, was kept to a minimum. MTV wanted the teenagers to have access to the channel, and parents not pulling the plug. I Want Your Sex” by George Michael was about as racy as it got – and if you listened to the message, a positive one promoting monogamy.

Now, MTV has sunk to sexual come-ons by an attractive woman to all comers.

Who are the advertisers for this dreck? Does this stuff actually sell? Do the execs who put the ad placements let their own children watch?

I watched this program twice, right at the end of its first run, after seeing ad placements on various venues. I felt dirty. And definitely dumber. And I didn’t run out and buy any of the products being advertised.
