An Insider’s Guide to Freshman Dorms at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky

If you are planning on coming to Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, as a freshman this fall, one of the most important choices you will make is what dorm you should request to be put in. The selection of a residence hall needs to have many things taken into consideration. How far away from my classes is it? How close to food is it? What is the condition of the building? And since it is Berea College, and not all the dorms have been remodeled yet, you need to ask “Does it have air conditioning?”

The ultimate choice is up to you. What matters the most for you? Is it worth a longer walk to everything if you can have air conditioning? Anyhow here are the housing options for freshman at Berea College along with their respective pros and cons.

Guys:

Blue Ridge: Blue Ridge is one of two freshman guy dorms available, and in my opinion is the one to go for. It is the dorm that is farthest from the buildings which house the classrooms, so if you have a problem with sleeping in too late it might not be for you. It is approximately a fifteen minute walk to get to most places on campus. If you are a music or art major it will take you closer to twenty minutes. Blue Ridge however does have its advantages. You are closer to movie rentals and grocery shopping. Just a ten minute walk down the hill will get you to the cheap $2 movie rental and the local IGA. For everyone else it takes 20-30 minutes to walk to these places or to Wal-Mart. Blue Ridge also has air conditioning which is a commodity lacking in the other freshman guy dorm. There is also a large field out front which is perfect for pick-up football or soccer.

Dana: Dana Hall has the huge advantage of being located right near the main classroom building. I remember leaving for my first class with two minutes before it started and getting to class on time without having to hurry. The biggest drawback to Dana Hall is that it is without air conditioning, and the heating system is ancient, so in the winter, if you are on the 3rd or 4th floors, you will have your windows open trying to cool off. This hall also has the least flexibility in room setup. It doesn’t have bunk beds and the desks and closets are bolted to the wall and cannot be moved, not much room for creativity. One more thing to say about Dana is that this year, the Resident Assistants (students who are in the dorm whose job is to help the residents), are a good crew. I know several of them personally, and the main core leadership team is amazing!

Girls:

Pearson: Without a doubt this is the one to go for!! Pearson hall has just been remodeled and has not yet been lived in. It went from being the worst option to being the best. It has great location, right next to the gym and very close to the academic buildings (music building not included). Air conditioning, fine rooms, an elevator, and the opportunity to live in a brand new space make this hall the best option for incoming females.

Bingham: Bingham would be my last choice. It has good location near the academic buildings; however, it lacks air conditioning and is nowhere near as nice as either of the other two halls. It used to be a male hall only a few years ago so the cleanliness factor is lower than most. A huge bonus for Bingham though, is that it has the best main lobby. If you want to hang out with your friends, play a game, or whatever, the lobby is extraordinarily conducive to this.

Anna Smith: Anna Smith is a pretty good dorm. It is spaced about mid-distance away from everything. If your labor position is at Boone Tavern or the Bookstore though, this residence hall is closest to it. It takes about 7 minutes to walk to nearly everywhere else on campus. There is air conditioning, and the rooms are a decent size. The best thing about Anna Smith hall is that it has a huge front yard. If you want to do homework outside or toss a Frisbee or have a picnic, you don’t have to go far.

The other option that is available for incoming freshman is rooming with an upperclassman. If you know someone who is already at Berea, you can get in a room with them. Try giving them a call and seeing if it is possible. I have a friend who got into one of the best girl’s dorms her freshman year because she roomed with an upperclassman.

There you have it, the brief rundown of the available housing options. Good luck and see you soon!
