A Tour of Haunted Restaurants in Indiana

Restaurants are frequently haunted, especially in Indiana. The Rittenhouse in Bluffton has its own unique history, seeing as how it was once a funeral home, complete with a morgue downstairs. There are many people who claim to hear, smell and see funny things inside. Just as many people, if not more have visited and never experienced anything unusual.

The Sunset Grill Restaurant in Clarksville is also supposedly haunted. This was once a private home before becoming the McCollough Steak House and then the Sunset Grill. There are stories of patrons hearing strange noises inside the building. Employees have also arrived in the morning to find light bulbs unscrewed and carefully placed on the tables in the dining room.

The former Subway in Columbus is haunted, even though the restaurant itself is now gone. Employees would often hear the sounds of someone walking around the back room, when they were the only ones there. They also heard and saw a figure walk to the back, but when they investigated, no one was there.

Indianapolis also has a haunted restaurant, Magic Moments. The building itself was the site of boxing matches or at least that’s what the legend says. As these matches were unlicensed and illegal, it was common for boxers to die in the ring and some say their ghosts still haunt the building. Patrons and employees have seen odd things like glasses and silverware moved around the tables.

The city of Indianapolis is home to the haunted Slippery Noodle Inn. Local legend claims that there are two ghosts haunting the building. The first is a woman who worked there and was killed when the building was a brothel. Another is a former slave who hid inside when parts of the building were used on the Underground Railroad.

Another haunted restaurant in Indiana is Whiskey’s Restaurant in Lawrenceburg. The building was once two separate houses where one woman died. The houses were connected and the spirit still resides. She supposedly lives in the Malt Room and has made herself known by pulling on people’s clothing and leaving the scent of her perfume lingering behind. The Copper Kettle Inn supposedly also has its fair share of ghosts running loose.

Mishawaka, Indiana has one of the more famous haunted restaurants in the state: the Hacienda Mexican Restaurant. This old mansion was turned into a restaurant, but not before a grizzly incident took place. The former owner was sleeping with one of his maids and turned her away when she got pregnant. Rumor says that he killed himself inside, while others say she killed herself. Employees and patrons have all heard strange noises and seen weird things such as faces in the bathroom mirror.

The town of Madison has the haunted Madison’s Restaurant. The ghost here is the former owner who died while living above the restaurant. Though it’s changed names over the years, the ghost continues to walk around the building. There’s also the haunted Papa John’s Pizza in Seymour. Employees have seen a man in blue and hear weird noises in the building.

Those interested can also checkout the Tippecanoe Place Restaurant in South Bend. Clement Studebaker had the house built and lived there for a number of years. He saw one of his kids and a nanny die in the building after a horrific fire swept through the house. He would later kill himself after facing financial ruin. People see things moving on their own and hear noises like someone walking around.
