A Poem Called ‘North’

The mange of fall
bares the bones of the earth
to stone and stick
Autumn reduces her jeweled inventory to evergreens
and a few rogue tamaracks.
A serpentine of nondescript hills
circle like fortress walls
to protect life, gone underground.
The wolf’s nose is a compass pointing north;
chill air guides him home.
