A Father’s Day Poem for Dad

My father means the world to me
His quirks and his good humor
Are things that other people see
To me he’s just a goober

He’s funny, tough and sensitive
He taught us to be kind
To eat right and to exercise
But still enjoy the wine

As kids our doors were open
A shelter for the lost
He wanted to help people
Regardless of the cost

The Golden Rule was followed
When we were growing up
His faith is so rock solid
And his laugh can stop a truck

We recycled everything
Papers stacked up high
Cans and jars and bottles
Save the earth and save the sky

Words cannot express so well
The gratitude I feel
When I think of my sweet Dad
And the warmth at family meals

Our childhood was a happy one
We just didn’t know
The sacrifices made for us
Were more than just for show

So heartfelt thanks to Dad and Mom
I cannot leave her out
Otherwise we’ll hear of it
A loving, playful shout

How did we get lucky
My brother, sis and me
To be born to such great parents
It’s still a mystery
