How to Throw Your Own Prom Party

After Prom, Prom Decorations, Prom Party

Every teen loves the Prom and all the glamor that comes with it; however every teen also loves all the parties that come with this night as well. No matter if you are having yourself a Pre-Prom or After Prom party, I am going to give you step by step details on how to throw your own Prom Party.

Step 1:
Pick a Theme (Or Not):
This step is pretty basic. If you want to have a theme for your party (ie: starry night, casino night, etc..) then you need to decide this before anything else is made. This will help you the most when you are picking out your decorations and all the party supplies for your Prom party.

Step 2:
Guest List:
This is where you need to figure out how many people you would like to invite to this party. First ask your parents how many kids will be allowed to attend. After they have given you a set limit, make your list out. Do not feel bad when you do not include that guy you only talked to once this past year. Make sure it is a list of your close and personal friends, you know the ones you hang out with on a regular basis. Now, if you are lucky, Mom and Dad have given you the privilege to invite alot of people, and then you won’t feel so bad leaving every one out that you just waved to.

Step 3:
Invitations:
I would advise you 100% to have invite only invitations, which means you do not get in unless you have one. The key to this is that there will only be the amount of kids to show up that you handed one of these out to. If you do word of mouth, then everyone and their Mom’s will show up and that could make for a larger party then you pre-planned for.

If you have picked out a theme for your party, try to get the invitations to match that theme. If you are going with a basic party, you could either create your own from your computer or go to www.walgreens.com and create photo invites. Either way you decide to go, make sure you put on the invitation in BOLD print, Invitations Must Be Present At The Time Of The Party.

Another key point here would be to have an RSVP section. You will need to know how many people will actually be attending the party because you do not want to buy way to much more then who is coming. If you haven’t heard back from a certain amount of people by 5 days after the RSVP date then don’t be afraid to ask those people if they are attending. Some kids do just have a short track mind and they may have forgotten to RSVP, but they still want to come.

Step 4:
Food Time:
If you are throwing a Pre-Prom Party, you will need to plan a meal. Three courses would be great. Appetizer, main course and then desert. A great idea for this would be Spinach Dip, Grilled Chicken, and a piece of cake. The reason I suggest a dinner plan for a pre-prom party is because this is the time most teens will go out to eat before Prom. If you have an after Prom party you could really just stick with finger foods. Small sandwiches, veggie tray, fruit tray, dips, salsa and chips, little cocktail wieners, and cup cakes for the sweets. Just try to stick with your taste buds when it comes to planning what types of foods you are going to be serving.

After you have figured out what types of food you will be having make sure you head to the store to complete the list with the amount of items you will need. You will need to make sure you fix enough food on your menu for as many people you have invited. Also a good rule of thumb is to also add on 10 to the final head count just in-case you have some hungry teen boys there that want just a little more then you bought. Even if you have left overs you can bet your parents would love to nibble on them once the guests leave!

Step 5:
Lets Shop:
A week before Prom you will definitely need to start shopping for both your decorations list and food supplies. Don’t forget when it comes time to buy decorations you get all the essentials, plates, napkins, forks, spoons, knives, cups, serving trays, serving spoons, balloons, table covers, table centerpieces, banners and anything else you would like to decorate your Prom party destination with.

Step 6:
Play That Song:
No every Prom party needs music, isn’t that the main idea of Prom is to listen to music and dance? Well, you need to really look into your budget and destination when this item comes into play. If you are having this party not at your home and at a bigger venue then maybe a band would do great for your party. Can’t spend that much money on a band? No worries, just look in your own school. Maybe you are lucky and know a group of kids in a band at your high school or better yet check out your local college for any bands and see if they would be willing to play at your party. Most of these groups that are not that well known will be willing to pay at a cheaper price then hiring a DJ.

Now if you are having your Prom party at your own home and the space is not big enough for a band, then just rely on your CD player. The key is not about having the biggest music set up as much as it is about having the best music and with a CD (stereo system) you can achieve that by burning some Cd’s that have a collection of all the hit songs of the past year and also some number one hits over the past four years of you being in high school.

Step 7:
Test Run:
Either a day or two before your actual party make sure you go through all your items that you have bought. Make sure the food has not spoiled and the decorations are still meeting your expectations. Usually after you have bought the items for the party you always think of other things you still may need to grab at the store and this would be a good time to do that last minute shopping. DO NOT FORGET batteries for your camera, or even a better idea is to buy a bunch of disposable cameras and allow your guests to be the photographers at your party!

This is also a really good time to double check with the band if you are going to have one. Make sure they know exactly what time to be there (an hour before hand to set up is perfect) and their directions are right on target.

Step 8:
PROM PARTY DAY:
In the morning before you head out to get all ready for prom, make sure you decorate your Prom party place with all the decorations you bought. This will make it a lot less stressful because once you have gotten your hair done and clothes on you do not want to get all messed up with hanging banners and such.

When it comes to preparing the food and you have a Pre-Prom party, then get your parents to help out with the cooking. However, if you are doing an after Prom party, most of your items can be made the night before and kept in the refrigerator until an hour before the party begins. Just make sure you have someone around to set out the food because you will be out dancing the night away at your Prom.

And that is pretty much it. Not to hard, a lot of planning, but if you stick to a step by step guide you will be OK throwing your Prom Party.
