Dinosaur Party – Dinosaur lovers can really get a thrill out of a having a dinosaur party. Rope off a dig site in your backyard or at the local park. If you have a sandy area this would be ideal. Before the party, bury “dinosaur eggs” (Easter eggs filled with surprises), plastic dinosaurs or other finds. Hand out small shovels and pails to help in their excavation.

Movie night – Set up a makeshift movie theater in your backyard. Project a movie on a large white sheet, or solid wall of your house while the kids sit in chairs or lay on blankets. My sister-in-law does this near her in-ground pool so guest can float on inflatables while watching the flick. If you want a super easy alternative, set up a wide screen television in the garage and have kids sit in wagons and other riding toys. However you do it, don’t forget the popcorn!

Camping adventure – Host a campout in your backyard by setting up a few tents, (rent or borrow extras). Place a fire pit in the center and roast marshmallows while singing camp songs. Other ideas include working on a camp craft, going on a nature walk and taking time to really look at the constellations.

Olympics-style competition – Set up a variety of sporting events such as a volleyball net, long jump area, basketball challenge or a few relay style races. Kids can have fun going from station to station, or you can organize the party into events. Be sure to put the emphasis on having fun and not simply winning. In fact, you can even change up the rules to keep it interesting.

Garden party – A simple party can involve decorating flower pots and then planting flower seeds in their personalized pots. The activity and the party favor are one and the same! If you want to get more involved, you can provide supplies to make terrariums or gather the gang to plant flowers at a local senior center.

Painting party – Hang sheets or butcher paper on a fence and invite kids to paint a mural. They can use spray bottles filled with water and a few drops of food coloring, washable paints and brushes to create a fun outdoor decoration. After all the little artists are finished, take a group shot of the finished work to send them home with. The finished masterpiece can hang in your garage or be donated to a local agency.

Scavenger hunt party – Tie the theme and the activity together by hosting a scavenger hunt. Depending upon the age of the children and the area you live in, this party can include looking for items you have hidden in your yard, or expand into searching for found objects. A digital scavenger hunt is another possibility for older kids placed in teams.
