5 Fashion Tips for Seniors

Do you feel that you are “invisible” to the opposite sex now that you hit fifty? Do you wish that someone would help you feel better about your “senior self?” Try these five simple tips on flattering style, quality moderate priced clothing, correct size and confidence level to go out of your comfort zone to find that you do have what it takes for timeless style and the confidence to dress better.

Do: Wear the most flattering style for your figure.

Just because you looked amazing in pencil skirts in your twenties, your figure may have changed in your fifties or sixties. View the show “What Not To Wear” for tips on flattering your individual figure. Style is based on your current weight or height so you can be comfortable in current styles, not ones that need you to lose ten pounds to look stunning. For example, if you have a pear-shaped figure, it is suggested an A-line skirt would be more flattering below the knee. If you have a square shape without a waist-line, balance your figure with darker colors below the waistline, such as pants or skirt. Choose tops that show your curves rather than straight-falling tops. A empire waistline works well for this purpose. If you have a heavy bust line, balance your bottom half the same way and wear non-cleavage showing tops.

Do: Purchase moderate priced clothing with texture and quality.

Polyester is not the only fabric that is washable and lasts. Look for quality, not quantity at sales and definitely try on the article. It may look fantastic on the hanger, but not on you. Cottons and blends have improved a lot and look fresh and are washable. Read the contents label and follow the washing instructions.

Do: Buy clothing in your size.

Oversize clothes do not flatter your figure. They simply look too large. If you are not sure what size you wear, try on a few different sizes to see what fits best. If you are a plus size, do not shop in the “Juniors” department even if you prefer a younger look. The best rule of thumb is “tight is not right”.

Do: Try some different styles out of your comfort zone.

If your family has only seen you wear polyester jumps suits for the last twenty years, they will be pleasantly surprised to see you in a summer dress or coordinating separates with different textures and low heels with carefully chosen earrings, bracelet or necklace.

Do: Be positive and you will achieve confidence.

As we age, we lose our confident view of ourselves and feel we must keep up with the younger generations for style. Good taste in clothes is timeless and if we keep in mind a modest amount spent on a quality piece rather than ten cheap sale pieces, that top or sweater or skirt will be much more useful recombining with new items for years to come.
