Night Stand Rolling Stool

Supplies:
Night stand
Cushion or pillow
4 roller wheels with hardware

So, it’s off to the hospital to have my pinkie toe looked at; I cracked it – yet again – on the night stand. Seems every time I make my bed, that bulky night stand is in my way, and, “pop” goes the toe. I know what I’m going to do when I get home, though. I’m going to attach a piece of wood to the wall, right beside the bed, and there’s no more pinky-cracking risk. The wood serves as an out-of-the-way night stand, and the old, bulky one can go. And I know just what to do with it, too. I’m going to turn it into a rolling stool for my desk. Do you have a bulky, square-type night stand (and maybe a broken toe)? Let’s do the project together!

If the night stand that you have features legs, remove them. It’s not difficult to unscrew the hardware and take off the legs. With a no-legs night stand, you’re ready to proceed. You basically only have two things that you need to do to make a night stand be a rolling stool for your desk. Whether the night stand originally had legs or not, turn it over so that you can see the bottom, and install roller wheels. Shop at a home improvement store, or a place where office supplies are sold, and purchase a pack of four rollers – with the hardware.

Screw a caster into each corner of the bottom of the night stand. It’s easy to do with an electric drill but you can also use a screwdriver. With one wheel on each corner the rolling desk seat is nearly finished.

Make or buy a cushion for the top of the night stand. You can quickly sew one up by cutting two squares, and a band. Sew the band around one square, and then around the other one, leaving a small space for turning the arrangement right side-out. After turning, stuff it, and sew the opening shut. A much quicker method, though, is to simply purchase a square pillow or small, square cushion. The pillow or cushion will stay in place if you use Velcro. Peel and stick a couple of strips to the night stand, and stick their opposing pieces to the underside of the pillow or cushion.

The night stand desk seat is especially great because it usually features drawers, where you can store files, office supplies, and more. Don’t need a desk chair? Use the rolling stool at a vanity, or forget the wheels, and put the cushioned night stand in the bathroom. It will come in handy for sitting down to remove shoes. Now that the bulky night stand is out of the way, life will be less painful. My pinkie toe is starting to feel better already; what about yours?
