A child that has a runny nose can be miserable. The nose can keep the child from getting a good night sleep and it can make it hard for the child to concentrate. Since a child has trouble concentrating their school grades could be affected. A runny nose can make the nose raw and painful and it can lead to infection. Hay fever or allergies are major causes of a runny nose. Particles in the air irritate the sinuses and nasal passages and they try to remove them by causing the nose to run. As the nose leaks the particles are flushed out. A shower may relieve the runny nose but if you can’t get the child out of the particle filled air the runny nose will still continue.

Asthma is a common cause of a runny nose. Asthma is a lung disease that will make a nose run when a flare-up happens. As the body tries to rid the asthma attack it can make the nose run to help open up the sinus passages.

Nasal polyps can cause the nose to run. These can be remedied by a doctor but as long as the nasal polyps are there the nose will run. If not removed they can cause a nose to run continually.

An inflammation or infection can cause a nose to run. Mild infections may cure by themselves but a serious infection may need antibiotics to clear up.

A cough or sneezing may cause a child’s nose to run. They can also be a sign that the child is fighting off a cold or flu.

Allergies to food can cause a nose to run. Your child may be allergic to certain foods and that is causing the nose to run. A food allergy can be hard to detect. Many foods that commonly cause a runny nose are milk products, wheat products or chocolate. You may need to visit an allergist to find the culprit if it is a food allergy.

Allergies that cause a runny nose do not have to be food related. They can be caused from mold, like a moldy house or they may be chemicals in the air like hair spray. A child can be allergic to the polish you use on your furniture or the soap you use for laundry. The cause of a runny nose can be hard to find. You may need the help of a doctor.
