Attractions in Mansfield Ohio

Mansfield Ohio is hardly a vacation spot. The night life is limited to a handful of bars and the music scene is off-par. Some notable parts of this town are the religion, Kingwood center and the ease of access to substances. Mansfield was recently featured on Oprah detailing two heroin junkies who complained that it was too easy for them to get heroin. Unfortunately, neither of these two things provide anything to do or brag about.

When one drives into Mansfield (there is no airport besides the military base that is famous for having the longest runway in Ohio, and is the only one that can hold C-130 Jets) one will notice that there is a surplus of churches. The local paper (The Mansfield News Journal) ran a special in 2004 bragging that Mansfield has the most churches per capita in the state of Ohio. The churches that we do have though are beautiful. Mansfield’s St. Peter’s is one of the most serene places one can visit and draws so many people there aren’t enough seats in the pews (http://www.mansfieldstpeters.org). Each church not only offers Sunday services, but also many services throughout the week and weekly youth group. Despite the large religious crowd in Mansfield, when I get married, settle down and have a family, this is not a place I would raise children due to the large drug flow and crime rate. A little note to keep in mind is that Mansfield is home to two of the biggest prisons in Ohio one of which is a spot where the death penalty is carried out.

Kingwood center is a lavish estate once owned by a rich man in colonial times. When he died he left his entire estate to the city of Mansfield and it has turned into a preserved historic site. It is the biggest and most popular spot for homecoming and prom pictures as well as for people who enjoy nature to be free for a bit. One thing that I’ve found out is that if you are ever on a date to Mansfield, it is good to go to Kingwood center once or twice because the beauty of the estate will impress your date and make it seem like you are sophisticated and deep. It has charm, but after visiting once or twice it loses its fun.

Mansfield’s night life consists primarily of three bars, Goodfella’s (http://www.goodfellowsmansfield.com/), Kosta’s (no website available at the moment) and Woodchuk’s (also no website). What makes these three bars special is the crowd. On Tuesday night Woodchuk’s has the locally famous “Perkins show” (http://www.mikeperkins.net/). This is always a good time and draws a large crowd. The website has a sample of his music, and is also referred to as ‘hippy night’ because of the quote unquote hippies that attend. Friday night, Kosta’s is the bar to be at. Nothing makes this bar special besides how many people go there. It is not a distinguishable sports bar, nor a musically themed bar. It simply is a bar that people go to on Friday nights. Goodfella’s reigns supreme as best weekend event. Saturday night Goodfella’s packs up to the point where it’s hard to move around inside. There is dancing inside, a very friendly bar staff and even a second bar out back on the patio. There are bands that occasionally play there and Goodfella’s is definitely the best place to watch any sports game.

I’m sorry that I can’t rave about my town, but frankly what I just wrote is all there is to do. The bad thing is that people under the age of eighteen will soon find out that there is nothing to do at all, especially if they are new to town. The kids in Mansfield are very clique oriented and are not ones to welcome new-comers unless they are very socially adept (I have firsthand experience with numerous crowds).

So in conclusion if you are planning on vacationing here or moving here for whatever reason unless you are very religious and look forward to working with a church you will soon find there is not much to do. I have lived in Mansfield all my life (19 years) and have done close to everything there is to do and am consistently unimpressed with what I see.
