Putting Your Best Look Together for a High School Reunion

Quite understandably, there are few occasions requiring more thought on what to wear than for an upcoming high school reunion. Catching up with people you may not have seen since graduation at age 18 is enough to put anyone on a crash diet. Don’t panic! Relaxing about your best look is the best way to ensure a good time, which is really what it’s all about.

Choose your outfit last
Have you ever considered building your outfit in reverse? That is, selecting the color theme and getting all the supporting aspects of your look in place makes it easy to choose the actual outfit last.

Chico’s for style and budget
My mature model friend, Elsie, is planning for her 25th reunion and is putting her look together using Chico’s, a favorite brand with a range of sizes that is a perfect choice for a late summer high school reunion.

Consider your colors
Remember color me beautiful? Determine your “season” and plan to wear your most flattering colors nearest your face. Stop in at a department store and take some free advice, available from your favorite cosmetic counter. Budget for a couple of new buys, such as foundation or a lipstick.

Grooming is key
Invest in good grooming above all else. This is the time for a salon trim and to refresh hair color or highlights, if you normally have them. It’s not the time to experiment with new styles or new colors. If you want to play with color, use it in a manicure.

Fun jewelry
It’s not a job interview, so have some fun with your jewelry. Statement necklaces with plain necklines in jewel colors are trending. Chico’s says pile on style in layers, if you like. Katie Couric says a bit of bling exudes confidence and a sense of humor.

Don’t overdress
You know those parties when women wear sparkly cocktail dresses and heels while men show up in T-shirts and jeans? Well, let’s hope not, but your high school reunion could easily be one of those occasions.

Don’t underdress
You want to look your best, so leave the denim and tracksuit in the closet. Good trousers or a skirt and attractive top, a maxi T-shirt dress, or even a little black dress with a cardigan, are just right for any reunion venue.

Comfort counts
Forget five-inch heels. You may be standing for quite awhile, so choose ballerina flats or, for a bit of height, platforms or wedges. Here’s a summer-into-fall mid-height example from Kate Spade.

Choosing the perfect outfit
Once you have all the basics right, choosing the perfect outfit is so much easier, and Chico’s will actually help you in-store or online.

Chico’s Chat
I asked for suggestions from Chico’s Chat. The online agent asked about size, preferences, coloring and season, then sent through some lovely choices within five minutes. Three of my favorites included a slimming black classic chevron top with black trousers, a symmetrical sweater to cover the hips and show off a statement necklace, and a paillette tee to accompany a solid maxi skirt in a jewel tone, a great choice for those who prefer a coverup for the legs. Give it a try from the comfort of home, so when your reunion rolls around you’ll be relaxed and looking fabulous.
