Review: Vicks Waterless Vaporizer

Vicks

My oldest daughter has a viral infection and, as a result of her sinuses draining, was coughing non-stop all night Sunday night. After listening to her toss and turn for about an hour, I decided to give her some relief by running a vaporizer in her room.

Everyone was asleep in the house with the exception of my daughter and I and I didn’t want to wake anyone up by turning on the lights. So, rather than trying to find the steam vaporizer in the dark, I instead grabbed the Vicks Waterless Vaporizer out of her sister’s room (it wasn’t being used at the moment).

I purchased this product about two years ago when my daughter had the flu. At the time, I had been looking for a steam vaporizer (which I eventually did buy as a backup) because the one we owned had stopped working. However, due to just about everyone having the flu at the exact same time, I couldn’t find one and had to buy this instead.

I had some doubts about this product when I bought it but, now that I have owned it and used it every winter, I prefer it.

There are a couple things I like about this product versus the typical steam vaporizer. One of the main ones is how easy it is to set up. All I have to do is put one of the Vicks tabs in it and turn it on. This is much easier than the traditional vaporizer, where I have to fill it with water, add a measured amount of vapor liquid and remember to put salt in it so it produces steam.

Another thing I like about this vaporizer is it makes no noise. This is important because my daughter is not a sound sleeper as it is and she really has problems falling asleep with a loud noise (like from a vaporizer) in her room all night.

Even though I do prefer this product, there are some things I found I don’t like about it.

First, naturally, is the expense. The vaporizer is easier to set up because of the little Vicks pads you put in it. But, compared to traditional vaporizer medicine, those are kind of pricey. And, one is only good for up to a few hours.

I also found, even though this vaporizer comes with three settings that are designed to either create a stronger vapor or make the vaporizer pad last longer, there really are only two. The first setting (which I believe is supposed to give you up to 8 hours) just doesn’t produce enough to be effective. I had this running on the first setting in her sister’s room a couple weeks ago and couldn’t even smell the vapors unless I was standing within a foot of it.

Even with those issues, I still would recommend this product to parents. It is a bit more expensive. But, I think you will enjoy both the convenience and the fact it won’t make a ton of extra noise in your house.
