Review: The Melting Pot, Toledo, Ohio

Cheese Fondue, Chocolate Fondue, Fondue, Melting Pot, The Melting Pot

The Melting Pot in Toledo, has a catch phrase: “Dip into something different.” That’s exactly the experience you’ll get when dining at The Melting Pot.

Reservations are not required for The Melting Pot, but they are suggested. Large parties are welcome for reservations, as well. Reservations can either be done through The Melting Pot’s website or by calling the location directly.

When you’re seated at The Melting Pot, you’ll be given a brief tour of the menu – it’s not a huge menu, but there are lots of different fondue choices for you! The table looks a little strange, because there is an induction cook top built right into it. In short, an induction cook top works by heating up the special cookware instead of conducting heat from coils into the metal of the cookware. It works very, very quickly, and will make the pot very, very hot – but not the table. It’s perfect for fondue!

The Melting Pot offers four-course meals, and you choose how you’d like each course. When we chose the spinach and artichoke fondue, the server returned to the table not with a steaming bowl of dip, but with the ingredients to make it! She mixed the ingredients of the fondue together, explaining each one as we watched, then once it was all melted together we were left with a plate of breads and vegetables and two fondue forks each to enjoy the spinach and artichoke fondue.

Our second course was salad. The house salad at The Melting Pot is made with their own house dressing, which tasted like a raspberry vinaigrette. The Caesar salad has a sweeter-flavored Caesar dressing than most, and it topped with Parmesan-encrusted pine nuts, which add a wonderful flavor and texture to the salad. The greens were fresh and crisp, as well, making the salads a great part of the meal instead of just filler.

The main course of the meal at The Melting Pot is very interesting. You choose your meat combination, then you also choose what type of cooking style you’d like to use. When your food comes to the table, it is in the form of completely raw meat! The server gives you a bowl of what looks like broth, then puts a bowl of vegetables into it to simmer; you’re told how long to cook your food for – a minute and a half for seafood, two minutes for meats, two minutes for the vegetables – and you cook your dinner! Among your choices for meats and seafood are filet mignon, shrimp, and lobster tails – and many more! The meals ends up being equivalent to (but funner than) having excellent quality meats and seafood marinated and served to you. It’s fun for couples and for large groups alike!

Your meal should end with some chocolate fondue. There is a completely separate menu for the chocolate fondues at The Melting Pot. You can choose one of the pre-made concoctions, or use the menu to build your own. The fondue of the evening for us was the Milk Chocolate fondue with Bailey’s Irish Cream added in. The chocolate fondue is made at your table just like the cheese fondue was. This time, you get a plate full of strawberries, angel food cake, pound cake, marshmallows, apples, and rice krispie treats, all of which you can dip into the fondue for a delicious dessert.

The after-dinner drinks menu is very good, with coffee and cappuccino combinations sure to please everyone over 21 in your party. The wine list for The Melting Pot has also received acclaim from Wine Spectator for having one of the best wine lists in the world!

The atmosphere in The Melting Pot is warm and private. Many of the booths in the Toledo location are set in little alcoves so you can’t even see other patrons if they’re in the booths. Other boots are set in the middle, and these have high backs, so they also give the impression of not being surrounded by others. The lighting isn’t too dim to see, but dim enough to feel relaxed, and the music is quiet enough to compliment the scenery and allow for quiet conversation. The décor is mostly darker colors, which gives the restaurant an elegant air. There are paintings on the walls of stylized wine glasses with wine splashing out of them, or swirling in the glass. Even the restrooms are beautifully equipped with marble counters.

The serving and hosting staff at The Melting Pot is very professional. They won’t come to your table very often once they know you’re doing all right with your meal, and they pay attention enough to make sure that you’re not wanting for anything.

Prices at The Melting Pot vary, depending on whether you’re getting the four-course meal or just a cheese fondue, desert, or something in between. For the meal mentioned above for two, the price was over $70. The Melting Pot also has a Fondue Club. If you join, you will get a coupon for a free chocolate fondue.

This is a great place to go for special occasions. Because it was my birthday, I even received a card from The Melting Pot signed by the staff! The Melting Pot in Toledo, has a catch phrase: “Dip into something different.” That’s exactly the experience you’ll get when dining at The Melting Pot.
