Review: Jack’s Frozen Pizzas

Good Pizza, Papa Murphy's

My parents were out shopping the other day and happened to come across a sale on Jacks frozen pizzas. Since they were so cheap, they picked up a bunch for my family too; all of them sausage and mushroom (because they weren’t sure what varieties we liked).

I have had this brand in the past but it had been a while and I couldn’t remember much about it. So, since my wife and I really didn’t feel like making a big meal over the weekend, I decided to give them a try again (I made them in our new toaster oven).

I’ll start out by saying there were some things I liked about these pizzas. First, there were plenty of toppings on them. Normally, I will have to add cheese, mushrooms, etc. But, with these pizzas, I haven’t had to do that. There aren’t as many toppings as I would find on a restaurant pizza (like Pizza Hut or Papa Murphy’s) but, there are definitely more than I would expect on a cheaper brand of frozen pizza.

The pizzas also offer quite a bit when it comes to taste. I have purchased cheaper brands in the past and found they would either be very bland or the exact opposite, too spicy. That was not the case with the Jack’s Pizzas. The sauce had a good blend of spices; enough to give the pizza some taste without it being too spicy. This was actually a bit surprising because I thought for sure the sausage would put the pizza over the top a bit when it came to spices.

My biggest complaint about these pizzas would be the crust. Unlike the Jack’s Naturally Rising Pizzas that I have had in the past, their regular frozen pizzas have a very thin crust. As I described it to my wife, it was like having a piece of cardboard with toppings on it.

As I have said before, I prefer pizza with a thick crust but can tolerate thin crust if it is crispy. The crust on this pizza did not get crispy. In fact, despite cooking the pizza for longer than we were supposed to, the crust came out very flimsy and some of the sauce even leaked through it. This made the pizza somewhat difficult to eat without a fork or a lot of napkins.

Overall, I do think this pizza was a good pizza for the money and I would recommend it if you want frozen pizza and don’t want to spend too much. But, while it tastes pretty decent, don’t expect it to be perfect.
