Review: Domino’s Oven Baked Sandwiches

Cheese Steak, Dominos, Philly Cheese Steak

We recently saw a commercial for Domino’s Pizza’s new oven baked sandwiches and, thinking they would be something a bit different for dinner, we decided to give them a try.

While they were definitely different, I’m not convinced they were worth our money.

I’ve always questioned the logic of a pizza place trying to expand into other areas of food. It’s one thing to start offering pasta (like Pizza Hut now does) but offering sandwiches really doesn’t add up. And, in the case of Domino’s, they definitely weren’t as good as the commercial made them out to be.

My wife and I both decided to try the Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches they offered. When we ordered them, we decided not to get anything else; thinking the sandwiches themselves would be enough of a meal. However, when I picked them up, I started second guessing that assumption because they looked much smaller than I expected them to be.

As it turned out, the sandwiches did end up being filling; but it was a short-term fullness. We ate about 6 p.m. and, by 8 p.m. we were both hungry again.

I think the reason for this wasn’t so much the size of the sandwich but the stuff inside it. I’ve been to various sub shops and ordered their version of the Philly cheese steak. And, while some are obviously better than others; all of them manage to have their sandwiches overflowing with meat, green peppers an onions. So, even if, taste-wise, the sub is of a lesser quality, I’m still getting a filling meal.

The Domino’s oven baked sandwich didn’t do this. They had the same ingredients; just less of them. When I first saw the sandwich, I didn’t think there was even anything inside. It looked like two pieces of bread and that’s about it. I can’t really complain about the taste but this was the first Philly cheese steak sandwich I’ve managed to eat without having meat or vegetables overflowing onto my plate so I couldn’t help but be disappointed.

I will, however, take a moment to say I did like the bread the sandwich came on. A lot of sub shops around town promise the best bread for their sandwiches. I think Domino’s actually topped them in that category. It was very light and fluffy and, because it was fresh baked, had a different taste to it that was very enjoyable; it reminded me of the breadsticks we get as an appetizer at the fancy Italian restaurant down the street.

However, there is more to a sandwich than just the bread. And, as a complete package, I have to say the Domino’s oven baked sandwiches just don’t cut it. I wouldn’t give them a failing grade; but I can think of a half dozen other places around town that do a much better job and will go to one of them before ordering another sandwich from Domino’s.
