Review of David Burke Flavor Sprays: Flavor Without All the Calories?

Sugar Free Cookies

It sounds like a great idea. A flavor spray you can spritz on your food that has zero calories, zero carbs, and zero fat. The entrepreneur who masterminded this product idea is David Burke, a chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America who has published several cookbooks. David Burke wanted a way to eliminate unhealthy fats from foods while still retaining the flavor of his creations. To achieve this end, he developed the concept of the David Burke flavor spray, a spray on flavoring for the calorie conscious.

David Burke flavor sprays come in a variety of interesting flavors including smoked bacon spray, buttery spray, bleu cheese spray, hot and sour spray, teriyaki spray, banana split spray, cheesecake spray, peanut brittle spray, as well as a variety of fruit sprays. In fact there are over thirty-five flavor sprays available. The website recommends spraying one or two sprays onto your food of choice to give it added flavor and suggests spraying the sweeter directly into to your mouth to help satisfy your sweet tooth.

Do David Burke flavor sprays live up to their promise? I ordered several of these sprays off of their website to put them to the test. The flavor sprays I selected were the cheddar cheese spray, the birthday cake spray, and the popcorn butter spray. The prices were rather steep at $5.95 for a two ounce bottle. You could also order packs of different flavor spray combinations at a slight discount. You had the option of ordering directly online or by using their toll free number.

My flavor sprays arrived promptly and I was ready to try them. The idea of having the taste of cheese, butter, and birthday cake without all the fat and calories intrigued me. After opening the neatly packaged box, I marveled at how small the bottles appeared. Each two ounce bottle had a pump top so you could apply a controlled amount of flavor spray to your food.

I put the cheddar cheese and popcorn butter sprays to the test by spraying them onto some brown rice I had cooked that evening. Although the site recommended one to two sprays, I found it took more like three or four pumps to detect any real flavor. Expecting the taste of real cheese on my rice, I was disappointed to find the cheese sprayed rice had a synthetic taste not at all like cheese. Although the popcorn butter flavor spray was better, I wouldn’t find it to have any advantages over Butter Buds which is a cheaper option.

I tested the birthday cake flavor spray by spraying it both on vanilla ice cream and directly onto my tongue. I found the flavor to be pleasing, not unlike birthday cake in flavor, although rather weak in strength with a slightly synthetic aftertaste. A bit disappointed, I added some sugar free cookies and cream flavored coffee syrup to my ice cream and enjoyed the rest of the bowl.

While I can’t speak for the other flavors, I wasn’t overly impressed with David Burke flavor sprays. The high price, synthetic taste, and rather lackluster flavor didn’t win me over. On the plus size, David Burke seems to have gotten a lot of celebrity endorsements for his product including Ms. USA and Donald Trump. Since making my purchase, I’ve heard through other websites that the smoked bacon spray is the best of what they offer. If you want to try one of their sprays, this one may be the way to go.

One useful application for these flavor sprays mentioned on their website is using them to conceal the flavor of liquid medicines for children. This sounds like a potentially helpful way to put these sprays to good use. Otherwise, I think I’ll stick to alternative methods for flavoring my food.
