Review of VitaSpelt Organic Spelt Spaghetti

I make pasta dishes a lot, well actually more specifically I make spaghetti a lot. I keep things new though by using both different tomato and pasta sauces and by using different brands of spaghetti noodles. One thing that is always the same is that the brand that I choose is going to be organic and another thing that is common is that the spaghetti that I choose is whole wheat. Recently though I have been cooking half whole wheat spaghetti and half something not so hearty. The other day though while scanning the health food section of the grocery store I came across VitaSpelt Organic Spelt Spaghetti. It was organic so it would fit under that category and although it wasn’t whole wheat I had become very fond of spelt products. Prior to this shopping trip I had already tried Rudi’s Organic Bakery Organic Spelt English Muffins as well as their Spelt Hamburger Buns, and had actually decided to keep an eye out for other spelt food products. So I grabbed a box of this pasta and planned on eating it that night.

The VitaSpelt Organic Spelt Spaghetti came in a box, which was a huge plus. Although from time to time I am still getting spaghetti that comes in a plastic bag I much more prefer to get pasta that comes in a box. Stamped on the side of the box was “Recycled Package” and “Product of U.S.A.” I was happy about seeing both of these things has I am for recycling and seeing how the pasta is a product of the U.S. I can know it didn’t have to travel far. As I studied the box I decided to see what the ingredients were. Organic spelt wheat flour, that is unbleached, unbromated and unenriched, and water are the ingredients in this pasta. I learned that unbromated means that the flour is high in protein. This is something that is true of spelt, one of the reasons that I wanted to get it more, and from here I decided to scan the nutrition facts to see what other good nutrition besides a high amount of protein that this pasta had to offer.

The box of VitaSpelt Organic Spelt Spaghetti was only eight ounces and a serving of spaghetti is two ounces so each box only contains four servings. In each serving there is two hundred and ten calories with only ten calories from fat. There is eighty milligrams of potassium, forty two grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fiber, nine grams of sugars and nine grams of protein as well as eight percent of your daily need of iron in each serving as well. I was surprised to see such a high sugars content, as previous pastas that I have tried like Delallo Organic Whole Wheat Pasta,

Heartland Organic Spaghetti and Westbrae Natural Organic Whole Wheat Spaghetti have either had one or two grams of sugars. Even with the high sugars content I still thought that the nutrition facts of this spaghetti were really good.

When it came time to prepare the spaghetti I was amazed to read that it cooks in under ten minutes. The exact directions were to cook it seven to nine minutes, which would make it the fastest cooking spaghetti that I have every tried, and stated in all capital letters “DO NOT OVERCOOK.” I was very careful to watch the clock while I was cooking VitaSpelt Organic Spelt Spaghetti and stopped cooking it at exactly nine minutes. It was a thin spaghetti and some of the tips of the noodles were curled right out of the box. It tastes very good, not hearty at all but clearly good for you. The pasta was very, very white but filling too. I thought that it tasted very good. I found it on sale for two and a half dollars, which is kind of a lot considering you are only getting four servings. I would however recommend to anyone to get this pasta for its nutrition and taste. If I see it on sale again I will be inclined to get it again, and I suppose that if I can find it for much less I’ll be inclined to even stock up on it.
