Review of Avon’s Shredding Scissors

Avon, Scissors, Shredding

The Avon Shredding Scissors are sold via Avon representatives and cost about $10. Due to the fact that I like to shred stuff by hand (it is quite stress relieving!) I was given a pair of these as a gift. Given the amount of useless junk mail, the unending paperwork from doctors and pharmacies, pages of bank statements and other miscellaneous stuff that most of us don’t want others to read, every home needs to have some way of shredding all this paperwork to keep it out of the hands of unscrupulous individuals. The Avon Shredding Scissors are just one way to take care of this problem.

The Avon Shredding Scissors are a fairly heavy set of scissors that has five opposing cutting blades work instead of the normal pair of opposing blades. This allows the Avon Shredding Scissors to cut 5 fine strips in paper. The cutting length of the blades is about three inches or so. The cutting blades are made of stainless steel with plastic handles. The Shredding Scissors are much heavier than normal scissors as would be expected. The construction of the Shredding Scissors seems quite sturdy, though I do have concerns about the plastic handles staying attached to the blades (it is hard to determine how far into the handles the blade goes). The Avon Shredding Scissors comes in a sheath with a belt loop. I kid you not. This may be a great idea for a politician who needs to be able to shred a document with a quick draw, but I can’t think of any other reason for it to have a belt loop. The sheath (or perhaps the ‘holster’) does seem well made and sturdy.

So here is the stuff that really matters. The question is does the Avon Shredding Scissors really work in a practical way. The answer is sort of. The Avon Shredding Scissors will certainly slice through 2 or 3 pages of plain paper quickly, but its limited reach makes it a slow process. One stand folded sheet of letter paper is three layers thick which the Shredding Scissors can handle, but the reach of the scissors won’t cut all of the way across. This means that you have to cut from one side and then the other. Not a big deal, but it is a fairly slow way to shred your papers if you have a lot of them.

So the verdict is that yes the Shredding Scissors from Avon really work. It is not a fast way to take care of your confidential documents, but it will do the job. The Avon Shredding Scissors might make a nice addition to a desk where mail is opened so you could quickly shred the junk and be rid of it. As the Avon Shredding Scissors are hand powered, I guess that makes them environmentally friendly as well!
