Review of Revlon Frost & Glow Highlighting Kit

I really hate going to salons. I have very long hair that’s down to the middle of my back, and any stylist I’ve ever gone to has seemed very annoyed with having to deal with it. I can’t stand how rough they are with my hair and I hate sitting in a chair having a forced conversation with someone I don’t know for as long as it takes to get highlights. So I’ve been attempting to dye my hair myself for a few years now.

Up until this point, I’ve just been dying my hair one color. Recently that color was a medium golden blonde, but my dirty blonde roots had grown out quite a bit. I’ve had bad luck with all-over hair dye the last few times I’ve tried it (My hair came out an odd orange, brassy color), so I decided to try the Revlon Frost & Glow highlighting kit instead.

I must warn you: this is a product that you should not use if you don’t have a lot of time and patience. The kit contains a cap with holes in it, plastic hook, hair dye mixture, plastic gloves, plastic hair cover, and shampoo and conditioner packets. The kit cost me about $6.75 at my local grocery store, so it’s definitely cheap. There are different kits for different hair colors, so be sure to get the one that matches yours (I got the one for blonde/light brown hair colors).

To use this product, you basically put on the plastic cap and pull strands of hair through the little holes with the plastic hook, then apply the dye to create the highlights. Pulling the strands of hair through the holes took me around two and a half hours on and off (I got tired and had to take a few breaks), but I have very long hair of medium thickness, so it might be easier for someone with shorter or thinner hair. My two biggest problems with this process were that I was having a hard time reaching the back of my head (you may want to get someone to help with this part), and the hook was not grabbing enough hair. I would recommend buying a metal hook from Sally’s Beauty Supply (I think that they’re only a dollar or two) or using a crochet hook, if you have one. I managed with the tiny hook, however, but it was no easy task. I simply pulled as much hair as I could through all of the holes I could before I lost my patience, and I got a pretty good amount of hair pulled through. I had to wrap my remaining hair with a plastic sack so the strands in the cap wouldn’t touch it, and this was a little difficult, too (Once again, if you have shorter hair, this probably won’t be as much of a problem for you). I then applied the dye, wrapped my head with the plastic covering, and twisted the front of it and secured it with a hair clip to keep it on my head. I left the dye on for a full hour (the maximum amount of time the instructions said), because I’ve learned my lesson in the past about washing dye off too soon (you’ll end up with orange or yellow hair).

After rinsing, shampooing, and drying, I must say that the results weren’t half bad. My hair was a little dry and crispy, but not any worse than it has been in the past with other dye products. The color of the highlights was a light, whitish blonde, not yellow or brassy at all. I had a few odd spots from where I didn’t manage to pull some chunks all the way through the holes, but they weren’t too noticeable (I think with a better hook, my results would have been better).

Here are some tips that I would recommend for using this product:

buy a better hook or use a crochet hook;

buy some purple shampoo (I use Clairol Shimmer Lights, which can be found at Sally’s, too) to use if your highlights are a little brassy;

leave the dye in for a full hour;

shampoo your hair about 24 hours before you dye it; and

make sure you have plenty of color-protecting conditioner to use afterwards, because you’re going to need it (I used TRESSeme color thrive for blondes, and it worked very well).

I would say this product is definitely worth a shot. If you’re looking to save money on your beauty regimen and you have a lot of patience, give this product a try. I’m pretty pleased with how my hair turned out, and I think it could be even better next time if I get a better hook. It’s a lot of work, but it beats paying over a hundred dollars to go to a colorist that may or may not do a good job.
