TV Review: Big Brother Season 9

House Guests

Big Brother 9 started two weeks ago and has been nothing but a pit of drama from the outset. Not only are the players playing for money, but they are playing with a partner. That was definitely a great setup for the drama to begin. When the players entered the house, there were two couples who knew each other.

That’s right, there was a couple that was dating at the time they entered and there was a couple that had split up. If that wasn’t enough, the players, including those two couples, were going to be paired off based on what Big Brother thought their soul-mate match would be. The dating couple was split, but the exes were put together. If those two explosive situations weren’t enough, one of the couples, a 46 year old woman and a 29 year old man were put together. They sparked right off, but not in the way one would with a soul-mate. It was an instant dislike.

The season has been dramatic in so many ways, including one of the house guests causing quite a controversy with his usage of the term “retards” for the disabled children that he works with. There was even one of the worse fights in the history of Big Brother between two of the house guests that included the comment that she should be given a noose so she could “hang herself like her father did.”

In a less dramatic, yet house shaking event, one house guest was called into the diary room and did not return to the house. His partner was called in a short time later and was told of the house guests departure due to “an urgent personal matter.” He was replaced in the house by a previously evicted house guest who had been in sequester. No one really knows what really happened to the house guest, but he is the first to leave without being evicted since 2003.

If that drama wasn’t enough, the drama got even more real and more scary with two incidents that required medical treatment. One house guest had a severe allergic reaction to something and required medical attention from the nurse on site. During that same time, another house guest passed out in the hallway. She was rushed from the house after coming back around. She wasn’t aware that anything had happened when she came to, so she was taken to be checked out.

Both of the house guests returned to the house, no worse for the wear, but it seems like the rest of the house guests have a different outlook on things. Hopefully the fighting, gossip and drama will drop back to normal levels for the rest of the season. That’s not to say the drama needs to end, but come on, we’re only into the third week of the show and there has been more drama than there than there is has been in most of the previous eight seasons.
