5 Ways to Clarify Hair Without Shampoo

Acv, Bentonite Clay, Hair Frizz, Natural Hair Care, Washing Hair

Quite a few people are on the no shampoo kick. For good reason, since shampoo contains detergents that strip away moisture from hair. However, shampoo is the only method many know of that will remove product buildup. There are a few ways to remove this buildup without needing to go back to shampoo. Here are five ways to clarify hair without shampoo.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

I’ve spoke of this before. This rinse is a good pick me up for hair. It removes product buildup and leaves hair feeling softer and shinier. There are many recipes for this process. All you need are about two tablespoons of ACV to one cup of warm water. Rinse hair with the mixture and proceed to condition and/or style hair as you normally would.

Bentonite Clay

I heard a few people in my natural hair care group talk about Bentonite Clay for hair. I know this clay is great for removing impurities and toxins from the skin. It also does the same for hair. I must warn that this mask can’t be used on all hair. If your hair is chemically processed (relaxed, straightened, colored, permed, etc.) the clay will interfere with these processes. For example, it will strip away or fade dye from hair. Here is a recipe from Anita Grant for making a Bentonite Clay Hair Mask:

Ingredients:

Bentonite Clay powder

Water – can be replaced with your choice of liquid for example: Organic Coconut Milk, Herbal infusion or anything you like…

  1. Mix 1 to 2 parts Bentonite Clay
  2. Slowly add water to the clay until you achieve a pancake mix texture.
  3. Apply to your hair (dry or wet)
  4. Allow to set for between 15 – 20 minutes
  5. Rinse thoroughly until it’s all out of your curls, kinks and coils.

Unlike when applied to the face, you do not want to allow the clay to dry on the hair. So Place a plastic cap over hair while you wait.

Baking Soda Rinse

Baking Soda also helps to clarify hair in lieu of shampoo. You use this rinse in the same manner as the ACV rinse. Then follow with a deep conditioning treatment.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons of baking soda

3 cups of warm water

Mix ingredients well, until the baking soda is dissolved in water. Pour mixture over hair, massaging it in and rinse.

Club Soda Rinse

Some of you may have heard that to rinse chlorine from your hair club soda is good to try. Well club soda is good at clarifying hair by removing mild buildup. Another great effect club soda has on hair is that it helps to reduce hair frizz. After washing hair give hair one last rinse using club soda. Follow with a leave-in conditioner.

Terressentials Mud Washes

Mud is not just for your skin anymore. Actually, the mud wash I am referring to are the Pure Earth Hair Washes from Terressentials. There are five mud washes to choose from — Organic Lavender Garden, Organic Cool Mint, Organic Left Coast Lemon, Organic Sultry Spice and Organic Fragrance-Free. It may take about three consecutive days of using one of these hair washes to remove product buildup. Some people with Afro-curly hair have had good results using the washes such as better curl definition, softness and shine. You may want to give one of these mud washes a try.
