Product Review: Vaseline Baby

Baby Gift Basket, Diaper Ointment

Vaseline Baby, Baby Fresh Scent, is a Vaseline product designed for babies. The main difference, however, is simply that Vaseline Baby has a baby fresh, powdery scent. The scent is similar to that of a freshly bathed and lotion-scented baby.

Vaseline Baby Product Details

Vaseline Baby is similar to the regular Vaseline product. It is a skin protectant made from 100% pure petroleum jelly. Vaseline Baby is hypoallergenic. The added ingredient in Vaseline Baby is fragrance. The petroleum jelly is packaged in a plastic jar with a removable pull up lid. The jelly is soft and slick, with a greasy consistency. The translucent jelly is a clear color. The 13-ounce size jar retails for a little less than $4.

Directions for Use
For diapering purposes, the manufacturer recommends a 3-step process, which is basically a “clean, dry, and apply approach.” After cleansing a baby after a diaper change, let the baby’s skin dry completely and then apply a liberal amount of Vaseline Baby over the intended area.

Ingredients:
Active-White Petrolatum
Inactive- Fragrance

Cautions
Do not use on overly deep or puncture wounds, infections, or lacerations. If accidentally swallowed, contact a physician or Poison Control Center. If the condition does not improve within 7 days of use, or if it worsens, call a doctor. Avoid the eye area and Keep Out of Reach of Children.

Vaseline Baby Product Claims:
-Protects chafed skin due to diaper rash
-Seals out wetness
-Treats and prevents diaper rash

My sister now uses Vaseline Baby for nighttime diapering and after a bath on a regular basis. The baby has not had skin irritation since she began to take this step to prevent it. When he had a rash this summer, however, Vaseline Baby was not enough to remedy it. Her doctor recommended a diaper rash cream. Vaseline Baby works better for the prevention of diaper rash by creating a barrier for the skin. It also helps to keep his sensitive skin soft.

Vaseline Baby has become my alternative to regular Vaseline. The scent is much better than the oily smell of regular petroleum jelly. Vaseline Baby works well to soften skin and I like to “bag my feet” in plastic and a coating of Baby Vaseline after a hot soak. This is only an occasional treat, though. I mainly keep a jar of Vaseline Baby as part of my regular medicine cabinet supplies. It works wonders for reviving weathered, chafed, or extremely dry skin.

I prefer this version for use on my children. It helps to protect their minor cuts and scrapes when the occasion arises and I sometimes put some on my youngest after his bath. I have not used Vaseline Baby for use on chapped lips, mainly because it smells too much like a baby lotion. Contact lens wearers need to be especially careful when using Vaseline Baby. It takes some extra washing to get the jelly off of hands.

Recommendation

I recommend Vaseline Baby for use on babies to prevent diaper rash, but not as a treatment for more troublesome diaper rash irritations. This would make a nice addition to a baby gift basket or for a new mother who has not tried the baby version of Vaseline yet. I purchased it for occasional use because I was curious and liked the added scent much more than the regular version. Some people may use the product more frequently or liberally, but my jar will last through the winter. The price is comparable to regular Vaseline in the standard size.

The Bottom Line: Aside from the baby fresh scent, Vaseline Baby is pretty much the same as regular Vaseline, except this version comes with diapering application instructions.
