Product Review: Tom’s Natural Deodorant

Antiperspirants, Underarms

I was like so many other Americans was tired of my white or lightly colored tops being ruined by yellow pit stains after wearing them only three or four times. I knew that this was caused by deodorant and I believed it was just something I’d have to live with if I still wanted to smell clean, so I just became resigned to purchase white t-shirts every two or three months. One day I read in a magazine that the aluminum in antiperspirants is what causes the yellow stains under the armpits and a few months later I read that if a person’s body absorbs too much aluminum like the one found in antiperspirants it could potentially cause Alzheimer’s. This info made me want to switch to a deodorant without the aluminum. I purchase my deodorant from local drugstores and I noticed that the vast majority of deodorants that I’d used and liked had the aluminum, so I decided to try one that I’d never used before and this decision led me try Tom’s Natural Deodorant even though it was about two dollars more than the other ones.

The CVS that I purchased this deodorant from only carried three scents, unscented, calendula, and another scent that I abhorred, so I just went with the calendula. The calendula does smell a tad masculine and woody but I liked it because it smells fresh. When I tried the deodorant the next day I was surprised by how gentle it was to my underarms, even though it’s skin too most deodorants dry the gentle skin out and leaves it itchy and irritated. But this deodorant contains ingredients like aloe vera leaf juice and chamomile so it felt really soothing and moisturizing as it went on. Even though it’s in a solid stick form, the solid is c-thru, like a gel and another added benefit to Tom’s Natural Deodorant as the fact that it was didn’t leave any white marks on my clothes. Also when I raised my underarms it looked like I had nothing on this was great, because I’ve tried tons of different deodorants that supposedly go on clear that still leave white marks or have to be rubbed in to look clear. It also passed the shirt test and left my white shirts looking clean and crisp.

The only bad thing about the deodorant was the fact that it offered no protection when I needed it most. Since it isn’t an antiperspirant it would sweat right off and after wearing it for four hours it was like I didn’t have any deodorant on at all. I tried using it for about a week to see whether or not I needed to get used to it, but I always got the same results whether I was walking around working up a sweat, or whether I was at home just lying around after a shower. I would still get really sweaty and then I’d smell. I would have gotten used to the sweating and would still use this product if it had gotten rid of the smell but since it doesn’t I don’t really use it, unless I’m wearing a white shirt.

I would only recommend Tom’s Natural Deodorant to that rare person who only needs light protection from a deodorant. Or to someone who wants to go natural and doesn’t care about sweating or smelling later on through the day. I’d also recommend it to a woman who’s going out to an event where her arms will be exposed and she doesn’t want to worry about white marks, just be sure to reapply every two or three hours. But for the rest of us this deodorant should be left on the shelves.
