Technology Product Review: Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone

Trackball

Barely a week after I have done my review with my Verizon Blackberry 8703e, I was able to get me a new Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone. Since I work for the technology department, I was able to swap out my 8073e with this new model. For the same price as the 8703e, the Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition is a slimmer, and comes with a better holster (my two complaints about the 8703e model see my review at http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/380728/product_review_verizon_blackberry_8703e.html )

The Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone is very stylish and light. It is very sleek and makes use of trackball navigation and a new backlit QWERTY keyboard. The trackball is strategically placed in the middle top of the controls, making it easier to control with your left or right thumb. This means lesser pain from extending your thumb on the right top side of the system which is what the other older models have. The QWERTY keyboard allows you to easily type messages unlike regular cell phones where letters are shared in each key.

The Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone comes equipped with microSD expandable memory support. The removable memory allows you to store audio, photos, and videos separately from the device’s internal memory space. It has a brilliant, full-color, and high resolution display screen which allow you to do your phone and PDA functions more visibly.

The Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone also has a speakerphone, a feature that I cannot do without. I am always on calls and having a speakerphone feature allows me to talk hands free while driving. It has also BlueTooth capability, which will allow you to use or connect to BlueTooth compatible devices such as like wireless headset or ear piece within 30 feet of distance.

The Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone has a clear and easy to use phone feature, which allows you to program several of your contacts and be able to dial them quickly. The sound and signals are clear, so there are fewer to no dropped calls. It is easy to receive and make calls with the Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone. It is easy to program and use the voicemail feature of the Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone. There are several ring tones to choose from or you can download ring tones to use if you want a more unique sound.

The Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone has text messaging capability, allowing you to send and reply quickly to text messages. This can save you money on phone calls if you want to communicate quickly with your contacts. The email capability is also similar to any Blackberry devices, using Outlook on mine which connects to a Blackberry server in the enterprise. But you can also configure this using your internet email account like Yahoo. You can read attachments like word documents and excel. One of the features the Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone has that the 8703e model doesn’t is the spell-checker, a feature that I always find very helpful. There are also shortcuts to use for easy messaging.

One thing about the Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone that the 8703 does not have is the Voice Dialing capability. It allows you to do other things, like driving, and still dial numbers for you with simple voice commands. I have tested this but only worked 3 out of 5 times. I think my main issue is that my contact list needs to be renamed for easier recognition. I find that this would be tough to for people with speech difficulty or those who are not fluent in English.

The Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone has BroadBandAccess Connect. You can stay connected while away from your office. There are 242 major metropolitan areas covering 200 million people from Verizon high-speed network broadband access. This is an optional service that you may want to avail of when you subscribe to the Unlimited Blackberry Data Plan or Voice and Data Choice Bundle.

Another optional plan from the Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone is the Global Phone. It will allow its user to make calls within the United States and abroad. This will make travel communication almost seamless, so that the user can stay productive anywhere. In order to take advantage of this service, this should be included in the calling plan.

The Verizon Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone is easy to synchronize with your desktop, once you set it up to synch up wirelessly; you do not have to worry about re-synchronizing each time you get a new calendar invite. From time to time, you may have to synchronize if you add new contacts to your list. The USB cable can be connected to your laptop or computer to easily synchronize at the same time re-charging the battery. The battery life is as long as the 8703e, if you do not use it as much for talking all day, you can do without re-charging until night time, if you use it to talk occasionally, the battery will last 8-12 hours. If you do straight talk, the battery will last 3-4 hours.

Overall this entire product is a winner! I give this a rating of 5 out of 5 stars for functionality, performance, sleekness, and dependability allowing the user to be more productive anytime and anywhere. Price: $399.99 – $100.00 internet rebate= $299.99 with 2-year contract with Verizon Wireless at the time of this writing.
