Restaurant Review: Berryhill Baja Grill in Sugar Land, Texas

Baja, Sugar Land, Tamales

It was wonderful to dine at Berryhill Baja Grill. They are located at 13703 SW Fwy., Sugar Land, TX 77478. This is one of eleven locations in the Houston area and I must give the location in Sugar Land two thumbs up. This lively restaurant appeals to the whole family. We were warmly greeted by owners, Jeff and Wendy Brooks, and felt immediately at home.

History

The famous Berryhill tamales have been around since 1928. Walter Berryhill began selling the tamales on the street corners of River Oaks and Houston out of a pushcart. In the 1960s, Walter Berryhill decided to retire from the pushcart business. He packed up his famous cart, recipes and his tamale press and stored them away. Fortunately, in 1993 his recipes were resurrected in a little restaurant named Berryhill Tamales and Tacos. Since the 1997 purchase of the original restaurant by The Anon Group, Berryhill Baja Grill has expanded into 11 locations in the Houston area and 1 location in Austin, 2 locations in Dallas and 1 location in College Station.

Atmosphere & Décor

This is a casual restaurant with almost a sports bar feel. There are 9 televisions strategically located around the restaurant, one being a 45″ plasma television. To please the kids there are a couple of Megatouch games to play on. The restaurant is bright and clean with a Mexican flare.

Menu

They have a very extensive menu and are famous for both their tamales and fish tacos. If it is breakfast you are looking for you will find a large selection of breakfast items ranging from $1.99 to $6.95. The Breakfast Taco is made with egg, bacon, potato, Pico de Gallo and cheese served in a warm fresh flour tortilla. In addition, you can order Breakfast Chicken Enchiladas with Hagados sauce and two eggs.

The Chimichangas are $3.99 each and there are five selections to choose from. My personal favorite is the Baja Tacos, priced at $2.99, which can be made with tempura fried fish , chipotle marinated fish or tempura fried shrimp just to name a few. The red cabbage and the special sauce keep these wonderful tacos crisp and fresh. Of course they have the standards like appetizers, create your own combo meals, and platters but the real claim to fame is the tamales (3 for $4.50). Pick from beef, pork, chicken, black bean, spinach and corn or chorizo and potato. They are the best tamales that will ever melt in your mouth. The masa is light and fluffy, not heavy and thick like many tamales tend to be. After you have had your fill of tamales you will want to top it off with their award winning Tres Leches (3 milk with a hint of brandy) cake.

One member of my dining party had to comment on the Baja Tacos, “This is the best taco I have ever put in my mouth”. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. You will not be disappointed. Berryhill Baja Grill website is still under some construction but the entire menu is available to be viewed.
