Restaurant Review: Snacking at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas

Atlantis Resort, Dulce De Leche, Waffle Cone

During your stay at the Atlantis Resort, you’re going to find yourself getting rather hungry. Between braving thrilling water slides and riding sensational ocean waves, your active day demands some real energy. Of course, there’s a Starbucks situated within the Atlantis Marina, but you’re looking for something a little more… substantial. Right?

Plato’s

Ensconced in the Royal Towers of Atlantis, Plato’s express sandwich bar looks like the perfect one-stop cure for the afternoon munchies. With just enough sandwich options to choose from, including ham and cheese, turkey, and tuna, you’ll be filled and ready to hit the beach again in no time.

But there’s just a few small details you’ll need to work into your busy schedule at Plato’s. If you’re not ordering an alcoholic drink, you’re apt to stand in line for a while trying to get the attention of one of the bartenders, who might also serve as a chef and cashier. You’re also likely get a little sticker shock at the cash register. The sandwiches might come in huge slices, but they carry a hefty dollar amount to boot. You’ll find yourself paying $11.50 for one sandwich wrap and a lousy, personal size bag of potato chips.

And as for the taste? Let’s put it this way: you’re going to need at least three of those little mayonnaise packets they include with your paper plate – the sandwiches are pretty dry. Their interesting choice of sandwich bread might hit your stomach in a little lump as well. While it’s hard to say exactly what kind of sandwich bread they use, one thing’s for sure: it has plenty of little green and red things stuffed in it to keep you guessing all the way to the last bite.

So in the end, Plato’s can be a fine place to eat provided you’re not in the mood for Atlantis’s best of the best.

Village Creamery

No matter where you’re at in the world, the name “Haagen-Dazs” has the same ring: smooth, creamy rich ice cream, perfect for a hot day at the beach. But believe it or not, the Village Creamery serves up more of this delightful blend at night than it does in the daytime.

Located in the Atlantis Marina Waterfront near Starbucks, the Village Creamery isn’t exactly within a short distance from the beach. And your timing for getting in line must be impeccable.

At night, the Village Creamery is the first eatery to host an endlessly long line out the door. As soon as the dinner hour is up, you’ll find yourself switching feet with impatience behind crying babies, crazy mothers, irresponsible fathers, and little rug rats – all of whom decided to show up conveniently before you did. But if you’ve got the patience to tough it out, the ice cream’s certainly worth the wait.

The Village Creamery serves up 10-15 different flavors of ice cream at a time, depending on the season. Traditional favorites like rich chocolate and creamy vanilla share the stage with chocolate-chocolate chip, rum raisin, caramel cone, dulce de leche, crème brulee, and rocky road. Pile on your favorite toppings and serve these delights in an over-sized waffle cone, and you’ve got a splendid treat to go. You’re welcome to choose from a variety of sundaes, milkshakes, ice cream floats, and sorbets if you’re in the mood for sipping serenely. But like everything else at Atlantis, you’ll pay dearly for any cold goodie; simple arrangements like a one-scoop ice cream in a dish can cost as much as $4.00, and the prices go up from there.
